Iran wasn’t developing nuclear weapons: Anti-war commentator

The editorial director of Antiwar.com is challenging Israel’s claims that Iran was mere days away from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Scott Horton, who also is director of the Libertarian Institute, said those assertions haven’t been confirmed by other nations, including the United States.

“What they had all along is a latent nuclear deterrent — it’s the same as Germany, Japan or Brazil, where they had shown they perfected the fuel cycle, they know how to make nuclear weapons fuel, but they’re not making it,” Horton told “On Balance” host Leland Vittert on Friday, a day after Israel launched military strikes against Iran.

“With this attack, they’re actually more likely to pursue nuclear weapons now, whereas before they actually were not pursuing them.”

Horton faulted President Trump for voiding a U.S.-Iran agreement in 2018 that would have restricted Tehran’s nuclear capabilities. It was brokered by the Obama administration.

“Trump could have just got back into the deal and called it the Trump Deal instead of the Obama Deal, and all of this would have been fine,” Horton said.

LMAO he's right, Jim. The whole thing is a lie. They were even in the non-proliferation treaty until they were attacked and pulled out. Great going !

When being home schooled I read about WW2 history and read a book about the building of the atomic bomb. Since Iran was only enriching uranium (U238) the fissionable material was an isotope of U238 being U235. Was Iran separating out U235 from U238 or just enriching U238?

I don't give two sh*ts for "other nations" confirming anything. I'm pretty sure they don't have the intelligence connections in Iran that Israel has.

Beyond that, I don't give a crap. Those lunatic religious fanatics would gladly launch a nuke at us the first chance they got. They needed to be stopped 30 years ago, and I'm ashamed that *THIS COUNTRY* didn't have the guts to do what needed to be done back then.

Bibi was so transparent, claiming that the Iranians had made two assassination attempts on Trump, but when asked about evidence thereof he turtled back to we had sources within Iran, blah, blah, lie, lie.

It is the same thing. They "enrich" by separating out the 235 from the 238. The longer the process goes, the closer to fissionable material they get.

It was idiocy on our part allowing them to get so far.

1) Iran was not developing nuclear weapons.
2) Iran was threatening to use its nuclear weapons against Israel and/or the US.

How’d that work out for them?

Yup, the Iranian nuclear program was just a multi-billion hobby of some bored clerics tired of rereading demands to be charitable.

So he’s saying Obama had a better foreign policy with regards to Iran than Trump has now? Libertarians and their strange bedfellows.

Lie? Why are you calling him a "liar"? What possible motivation could you have to call him a liar?

Maybe you should give a cr*p given lives are on t he line and no one wants to fight and die based on a pack of lies

They are not pursuing a nuke (or were not) even though they could have they decided not to expressly and this is confirmed by the national security director and the intelligence services (Tulsi)

your assertions mean nothing and i think a lot of people DO give a cr*p if they should go to war based on this

It’s your carefree/careless attitude to war that led to the disasters of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan especially Iraq it has a lot of similarities to that I suggest

No, they just dug a hole 100 meters into rock just to house a ‘peaceful’ nuclear program and try desperately to hide it from any prying eyes... including the IAEA, which reported enrichment well above the levels needed for any peaceful purpose.

So whether they were an hour, a day, a month, or a year away from enrichment... it was happening.

“Uranium enrichment” refers to producing uranium with more than the naturally-occurring 0.7% of U-235. Iran has developed a stockpile of 60% enriched uranium. That’s way more enrichment than a powerplant needs; it’s only good as a waystation toward 85% enrichment, which is weapons-grade.

The IAEA toured the facility and Horton is saying they never enriched near enough for a bomb. It was latent deterrent and your famed Intelligence services AGREE

why not listen to them?
