Trump ‘thinking about’ joining Ukraine peace talks in Turkey

Donald Trump said he could join Russia and Ukraine for talks on ending the war in Turkey on Thursday.

The US president said on Monday that he was “thinking” of flying to Istanbul for negotiations after visits to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.

“I was thinking about flying over. I don’t know where I’m going to be on Thursday. I’ve got so many meetings, but I was thinking about actually flying over there. There’s a possibility of it, I guess, if I think things can happen, but we’ve got to get it done,” he told reporters at the White House.

From deeper in the Telegraph UK page: "The EU’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, on Monday accused Russia of 'playing games' and said there had to be a ceasefire before any talks to end the war in Ukraine."

So there's that precondition floated again. By a "top diplomat."

And even deeper: "Volodymyr Zelensky has said he is willing to meet Vladimir Putin in Turkey on Thursday for direct talks as long as there is a ceasefire in place." At 0731 AM UK time.

And then from Germany: "Russia needs to adhere to a truce before any direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine can take place in Turkey, Johann Wadephul, Germany's foreign minister, said." At 0845AM UK time.

The ceasefire is the chosen roadblock to an actual peace settlement.

The Eu/UK and Green Booger use that idiotic ceasefire nonsense because they know Russia will not trust Zelensky based on the last agreed upon, then trashed, treaty in Istanbul. After that clown show that Macron and his other EU snorters put on over the weekend, I would not blame Putin.

Trump should stay out of it this time. I am sure he wants to be there to see who is doing the most lying. LOL

All the media is saying earger the same thing, that the European pressure on Trump is to more deeply involve the US in what Marco Ruvio admitted was / is a "proxy war."

The current EU-ploitical class really wants to be obeyed, but not be asked to "lead." Ergo, Tusk's remark above. The Polish election is 18 May. Tusk really wants Europe as "a global force." Which implies, de facto, that currently they are not. Ergo that now-iconic photo of a call to President Trump....

Note those missing -- Orbán, Fico, Meloni, Vučić and other Europeans.

The thing is, just having Putin and Zelensky show up in a room together isn’t going to accomplish anything unless they have a competent mediator present, otherwise the negotiations are liable to deteriorate into the kind of thing we saw in with Zelensky’s visit to the White House, with both sides simply venting their grievances and making no progress towards a deal.

idea of a full and unconditional ceasefire — long enough to provide the foundation for diplomacy. And we want it, we are ready to uphold silence on our end.

I supported President Trump with the idea of direct talks with Putin. I have openly expressed my readiness to meet. I will be in Türkiye. I hope that the Russians will not evade the meeting.

And of course, all of us in Ukraine would appreciate it if President Trump could be there with us at this meeting in Türkiye. This is the right idea. We can change a lot. President
