My family with four kids used to go to Drive In Movies frequently. One evening, we went to see a movie with James Mason in it. My Mom loved seeing films with either James Mason or his sister, Pamela Mason in them. She thought they were both so dignified and so British.
Turns out this was a movie called Lolita.
After the first 20 minutes, Mom said she had made a mistake.
Seems this movie was “Too Grown Up” for us kids to see.
Suddenly, my Dad was taking the speaker and the heater out of his window, and before you know it, we were leaving the drive in. I complained a little, because I had been promised a double dip of butter pecan ice cream, and hadn’t got one yet. We picked up a box of Neopolitan ice cream at a grocery store and ate it at home. She didn’t want to talk about that movie or even James Mason for the rest of the evening.
My ex dated the Lolita actress Sue Lyon.
She was staying with relatives and he was fixed up with her.
“Suddenly, my Dad was taking the speaker and the heater out of his window, and before you know it, we were leaving the drive in. “
My father took us to see The Ten Commandments. It was summer and not dark till around 9 PM.
After about 2 hours he put the speaker away and we left.
I knew it was not over because we hadn’t seen Moses get the tablet.
But my father had to leave as the next day was a work day and getting up at 6AM.
Commendable, as were my parents who likely were even stricter, but which as a persecuted remnant today. Much due to the same parents not sending their kids (and they actually has more than 1 or 2) off to liberal colleges where they were baptized in iniquity 101.
My first Drive in Movie I remember was “The guns of Navarone” . Still watch it on TV occasionally.
James Mason did great in 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea; but, Kirk Douglas was a just awesome. When they filmed the “Whale of a Tale” song, Kirk unexpectedly grabbed the guitar, played it, and did the interesting handling tricks, all off script.
