Ha ha Canada. Now a Russian is the greatest scorer in the history of your national sport.
Watching Alex play from the Glass seats is a rare treat.Especially during his early career. Each goal had such a jubilant celebration.
I saw Alex O. in the headline, I thought for a second, we were talking about Alexis Ohanian, husband of Serena Williams. Never mind!
I’m more interested in how many goals a person gets playing for the UNITED STATES (or at least Canada), than I am about what a Russian gets over there.
(or at least that’s what the Media tells me to think)
after they changed the rules in 2005 to make it easier to score....D.E.I. record.
Congratulations Alex Ovechkin! The Great 8!
Amazing. CONGRATS to Alex Ovechkin and his teammates.
Not if you ask the Zeepers.
Changed what rules?
allowed 2 line passes...also, goalies cant play the puck near their own goal they are defending...3 on 3 O.T. that actually count in the players totals. If Gretzky and the Oilers had those rules, hed have scored 2000 goals. Not too mention open ice body checks not allowed. Completely different game now, and just awful to watch. NHL actually changed the rules in 1984 to try and slow down the Oilers and 99.
Removing the 2 line pass rule improved the game but, of course, did allow more goal scoring. A 2005 rule change. I don’t think Ovechkin ever scored from a two line pass. His goals are scored from his kitchen, the left center of the attacking zone.
Goalies cannot play the puck behind the goal line in the corners but can play the puck behind the net. A stupid rule directed at one goalie who has long since retired. Rule should be rescinded.
Overtime goals do count in stats, but that is one game deciding goal per overtime which usually goes onto a shootout and those goals do not count in stats. This was a rule change in 1983, near the start of Gretzky’s career.
Open ice body checks are allowed. Gretzky played at 6 feet 180-85 pounds. OV plays at 6’3” and 235 pounds. Completely different playing styles. Was Gretzky ever suspended? OV was suspended several times for the sin of playing hockey.
Allora.
1980-2000 were the greatest, highest scoring years in league history. Why would they suddenly change the rules? You are another one in denial that the nuetral zone trapping defense ruined hockey...and ALL THE TEAMS STILL PLAY IT TODAY. This garbage was started in Europe to defang the better, higher scoring soviet and swedeish teams. Then, in 1995, a mediocre NJ Devils team beat a much more skilled Detroit team..swept them in the Finals, by using this awful defensive trap garbage. Other teams saw this and thought , “hey, well do the same thing”. Sure enough, 1996, a pathetci, no name Florida Panthers team did the exact same thing to one of the great MARIO led Penguins teams. It was absurd. That was the reason Lemieux got fed up and retired. He got fined for calling the NHL a garbage league that favors unskilled teams. The very next year, Red Wings went to this trapping junk and won 2 Cups. Needless to say, by the year 2000, EVERY team was doing it and scoring cratered. Games became unwatchable..the league panicked and thats when they changed these rules. They were even gonna make the nets bigger, thankfully didnt. Funny, teams in the 80s and 90’s had no problem scoring goals with no trapezoid and no 2 line passes. The trapezoid was NOT started because of Martin Brodeur, thats a myth. Teams, to this day, all they do is dump and chase, and goalies before would simply shoot the puck around and out of the zone and theres goes your offense...thats why it was put in. The 2 line pass basically allows cherry picking, which was why it was put in to stop. Imagine Gretzky and the Oilers playing with these silly rules??..99 would have scored 2000 goals. If you dont think this ovie didnt score goals because of these rules, your delusional. AS of the OT, why 3 on 3?..it wasnt then in 1983, which you neatly left out. As recently as 2015, the leading scorer that year had 87 points!..they went from players scoring 150-200 points, to 87. And your gonna blame that on goalie pad size??....deny it all you want, but the game has been ruined, thats why a womens college basketball recently beat an NHL game in the tv ratings, actually doubled them. Its a boring, ragged, scrambled mess now. If that what you like to watch, more power to ya. But the super stars on the 80’s and 90’s made todays game obsolete, and all the rule changes and ovie “floater” goals is gonna change that. Idiots ruined their own sport.
