Read what the Russians say among themselves, what they teach in their academies. The Russian nationalists have not accepted the reality of Ukrainian independence. They see Ukraine as a rebellious part of Russia, as an artificial state created by the anti-Russian west. Rather than being provoked by any threat from NATO, they were motivated by a perceived weakness on the part of NATO. Putin thought that this was his opportunity to correct the mistake of Ukrainian independence.
