… Oregon transportation officials say that without more funding, residents like (Timothy) Taylor could see further declines in the quality of roads, highways and bridges starting this year. But revenues from gas taxes paid by drivers at the pump are projected to decrease as more people adopt electric and fuel-efficient cars, forcing officials to look for new ways to fund transportation infrastructure.
States with aggressive climate goals like Oregon are facing a conundrum: EVs can help reduce emissions in the transportation sector, the nation’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, but they also mean less gas tax revenue in government coffers.
“We now find ourselves right now in a position where we want to address fuel use and drive down reliance on gases and internal combustion engines. But we need the funds to operate our roads that EVs need to use as well,” said Carra Sahler, director of the Green Energy Institute at Lewis & Clark Law School.
Motor fuel taxes are the largest source of transportation revenue for states, according to the National Association of Budget Officers’ most recent report on state expenditures. But the money they bring in has fallen: Gas taxes raised 41% of transportation revenue in fiscal year 2016, compared with roughly 36% in fiscal year 2024, the group found. …

“States with aggressive climate goals like Oregon are facing a conundrum: EVs can help reduce emissions in the transportation sector, the nation’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, but they also mean less gas tax revenue in government...”
that appears to be a self-solving problem now that the nutty left has decided that EVs are no longer the ultimate virtue-signal, but instead are ACTUALLY the ultimate TDS-signal ...
Yep - was expensive in Italy when I was stationed there - we got gas coupons for our cars...does Italy still tax radios in cars?
Expect annual fees for your EV.
That was my first question. Maybe in whacko states like Kalifornia and a couple others. But not the nation as a whole. With electric vehicles being outed as expensive jokes fewer and fewer will be buying them.
Overall, gas and diesel vehicles are here to stay, and so are associated fuel taxes.
If the MAGA momentum keeps rolling, the whole climate change scam will eventually be exposed just like the covid scam is being exposed today. They are both pillars that kept the communists in power.
I can’t wait until all those ugly-assed wind mills come down.
Aaannnnd there it is, we have to feed the beast, and most electric cars/trucks are beasts as well, but it won’t stop at EVs. Govts have insatiable need for more money.
When I bought my home in 1985 my taxes were 899 a year now theu are 5000, and all I hear is “we” need more
“ Revenue is not the aim of taxation.
It’s control.”
EXACTLY
During WW II, the government rationed gasoline. Not because we didn’t have enough rubber for tires limit travel with gas rationing, preserver rubber tires.
Today, with EVs, do the opposite. Tax the tires and don’t tax gas.
“Electric vehicle owners don’t buy gas. States look for other ways to pay for roads and bridges.”
They’re also looking for people who actually WANT to buy electric vehicles, as they don’t seem to exist anymore, now that the novelty has worn off and their (fair-weather) friends are no longer impressed by EVs.
On average, electric vehicles (EVs) weigh more than their gasoline-powered counterparts, primarily due to the weight of their batteries, with many EVs tipping the scales at over 6,000 pounds. This tears up the roads much quicker.
Heavier EV’s should pay a higher rate per mile. Is that straight line increase in damage, or geometric?
That would be the ‘logical’ action, but I would expect that they would first seek to make up for the loss by increasing gasoline taxes. This would make the costs of owning an EV closer to that of an IC powered vehicle, and be a ‘disincentive’ to use gasoline, which as we all know, is evil.
My hybrid tags are more expensive than my gas suv lol.
I bet there is (was) enough money.
If we were allow to discover just HOW MUCH money has be wasted or out-right STOLEN for decades, there wouldn't be enough room in the jails we have in the U.S.
The Toyota Camry only comes with a hybrid option for 2025. The combined gas milage is close to 20 miles a gallon better than a standard ICE Camry sold last year.
Seems simple enough. Add road tax software to EV chargers. Works at public chargers as well as private and is levied on usage.
Tax bicycle lane users
Yes, pot holes fix themselves for free.
You live in a weird little make-believe world. Road and bridge repair goes on continuously. Can you tell me with a straight face that you've never seen anything like this?
Sometimes you get quite an education out of just that. A lottery is just a tax on stupid.
Imagine how good our road and bridges would be if we didn’t flush so much money down the toilet with all the USAID fraud that DOGE is finding.
