Most mainstream media narratives say the health of the U.S. economy rides on the day-to-day cost of eggs, and persistently high prices prove that President Donald Trump is failing at his job. But that talking point fell flat on Tuesday after officials announced that the price of a dozen eggs is now lower than when the Republican took office.
The news was broken by Brooke Rollins, the president’s secretary of agriculture, during an interaction with the media.
“We’re more focused on how we bring the price of eggs down and the avian bird flu for everyone,” Rollins said about the virus that’s killed hundreds of millions of chickens in the past year. “A good piece of news we’ve gotten in the last day or two is the price of a dozen eggs has now gone down a dollar and eighty-five cents since we announced our plan about a week and a half ago.”

On X, Republican Congressman Mike Collins (R-GA) credited the Trump administration with managing to steer the turnaround despite the Biden-Harris administration ordering the killing of approximately 166 million birds before President Trump took office.
Former President Joe Biden left behind a contracting economy that saw the price of a dozen eggs reach an average of $6.57, an all-time high. Shortly before Tuesday’s announcement, commodity watchers cited by Rep. Collins pegged the national average price at $6.08.
Despite the discrepancy between Collins’ and Rollins’ figures, both pronouncements underscore the fact that one of the main anti-Trump talking points in the media is starting to lose steam.
Democrats have been banking on egg prices to cut into Trump’s popularity, especially at a time when a declining stock market is weighing on investor sentiment in the wake of tariff disruptions. Some restaurants, such as Waffle House, are beginning to implement surcharges on meal purchases containing eggs, a constant reminder to voters that the price of eggs was previously expected to rise 41% this year, according to Time.
“When that is your day-to-day worry, the philosophical conversations about a constitutional crisis or the democracy is simply not a luxury you can afford,” Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet (D-MI). “I’m not saying we shouldn’t worry about those things, because we should and they are important, but they are not primary in the minds of the people in Saginaw, Michigan.”
To be sure, not all on the left are on board with targeting Trump for egg prices. Ezra Levin, co-founder of the far-left Individual group, laid into establishment Democrats for goading for a “1990s policy fight” rather than training their fire on billionaires like Trump advisor Elon Musk.
“They’re looking at polls that say inflation is unpopular, and they think Dems can win people with boring, tired talking points,” Levin told the outlet. “But it’s 2025 — this isn’t how politics works anymore. And their failure to update their approach to creeping authoritarianism is a simple failure of leadership.”
Killing all the chickens takes a while to replenish.
I paid $4.20 on January 17th at Walmart in Upstate NY
This is why the Trump-led FTC and DoJ are investigating whether the Biden Administration encouraged the chicken producers by using the avian flu as an excuse to cut down egg and chicken production to create a price floor, something really illegal under US antitrust law.
This would be somewhat good news, but $6.00/dozen is still WAY TO HIGH. I’d like to them below $3.00/dozen. And I’d to actually see eggs back in stock in the grocery stores. I was in Walmart yesterday and where would usually have hundreds (if not thousands of 12, 18 and 24 count eggs, they literally COMPLETELY EMPTY!
The stock market is their new talking point, and it’s far more effective
Gas is down as well. The market will come back.
BIL drives a rendering truck & during COVID farmers were killing what they couldn’t sell. He talked about going to a farm and picking up hundreds of pigs that the farmer asphyxiated because they were put in a position of feeding them but not being able to sell them.
There are so many other bigger issues than the price of eggs, and democrats are clearly in a bad place if that's the best they can complain about Trump on.
The media was so enjoying blaming inflation on Trump after only 45 days in office.
What are they gonna do now?
I’m looking forward to the price of gas dropping.
I’ve been putting off filling my tank.
They will tell us that Trump will cause WWIII by his refusal to attack Russia.
It has. The market is the issue, and it will come back.
The media is concentrating on the stock market “plunge” that they are blaming on Trump. In a few weeks it’ll be the price of gas, which almost always goes up in mid-April.
I paid 2.68/gl to fill up yesterday.
Honestly even during the Biden regime we did not notice the increase in egg cost. My Mom buys her eggs from Trader Joes its always 3.99 its been like that even last year, or she will buy from Whole Foods either way its around 3.99
“Killing all the chickens takes a while to replenish.”
Most hens start laying eggs around 18 weeks of age. 30 weeks is peak. Gas in Florida is $3.045 on average. Likely tomorrow we will be seeing under $3 gas everywhere. Diesel was down quick a bit too. More chickens and lower fuel costs will combine to keep lowering the prices. A lot of the slaughtered chickens are reaching age soon.
they’ll just move on to something else to bitch about in unison. They thrive on misery.
Now Trump MUST get the STOCK MARKET BACK UP somewhat!!!
“This would be somewhat good news, but $6.00/dozen is still WAY TO HIGH.”
Sorry things take a little while to work out. See my post above. Only a crybabies in the press and Dems expected Trump to resurrect millions of chickens (he is not Jesus) and lower gas prices on day one.
Everything is trending in the right direction. Be realistic and accept the good news that is happening. Act like a good Trump republican and quit parroting our enemy talking points.
