Movie "Conclave" is both anti-Catholic propaganda and secular confession
Catholic World Report ^ | Dec 2024 | Sean Fitzpatrick

Much ink has been spilled by Catholics over the new film Conclave—and not by way of praise. Directed by Edward Berger, it is a piece of anti-Catholic propaganda posing as a film—and it is very successful in that. But what will be said here (and isn’t being said enough elsewhere) is that I think the film is a warning to liberals within and without the Church to prepare for the death of Pope Francis.

Conclave begins at the deathbed of the pope, a liberal pope who had lost his faith—not in God, but in the Church. His sudden passing begins the darting glances and heavy anxieties of liberal cardinals who begin to wonder and whisper what will become of the Holy Father’s progressive legacy and whether the conservative African cardinal will reverse decades of “progress.” God forbid the rabid traditionalist and that antiquated Latin liturgy he clings to...

Conclave is focused on that progressive movement that Pope Francis has apparently encouraged during his pontificate. The soaring production values and dedicated performances lend credence to this film’s raison d’être as a picturesque protest against the “backwardism” of the Church that would undo all the liberal feeling Francis has allowed to flourish...

...Though this outlay is explicit and eye-rolling, there are more subtle influences in the film, such as the signature moment when the Cardinal Dean (played painstakingly by Fiennes) delivers a homily to open the conclave. He says that the Church’s gift and strength is its variety and diversity and that faith is a living thing walking hand in hand with doubt. Certainty, he says, is the enemy of tolerance and diversity, for with certainty, there is no mystery and no need for faith. He prays that they elect a pope who doubts, who sins, who asks forgiveness, and carries on.

I think it’s creepy how that film came out, and now it looks as if there will be a new Pope elected. Such timing.

As a fictional work, “Conclave” is unconstrained by the clear doctrinal requirement that the Pope must be an ordained bishop, a position that is only open to males.

Don’t know crap about this movie and I don’t plan to see it, but the Catholic Church itself is responsible for most of the issues plaguing it right now and the current Pope is a major reason, along with pedo Priests, and supporting illegals in our country...

Why give this movie exposure? It made 32 million in the entire American run. That’s a bomb!

Indeed. Hopefully God will work it all out for good, and someone truly with a servant's heart for Heaven gets to be pope...Not sure how much of the landscape Pope Francis laid the groundwork though for the opposite to be true..

Regardless, in God's hands.

There is an effort to undermine the Holy Roman Catholic Church. This effort has drawn on many various sub-groupings; the latest being the transexual movement. Its revolutionaries have reorganized themselves into a multitude of single-issue groups. Thus we now have, for example, radical feminists, black extremists, anti-war ‘peace’ activists, animal rights groups, radical environmentalists, ‘gay’ rights groups and the latest being the transsexual movement. All of these groups pursue their piece of the radical agenda through a complex network of organizations such as the The Open Society Foundations (OSF), Gay Straight Lesbian Educators Network (GSLEN), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), People for the American Way, United for Peace and Justice, Planned Parenthood, Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), and Code Pink for Peace.

Both communism and the New Left are alive and thriving here in America. They favor code words: tolerance, social justice, economic justice, peace, reproductive rights, sex education and safe sex, safe schools, inclusion, equity, diversity, and sensitivity. All together, this is Cultural Marxism disguised as Diversity.

Now, because of Pope Francis, they have infiltrated into the Church using the Social Justice tactic. The Church’s opposition to abortion is in jeopardy. Sin will be just a smorgasbord of options; not to be treated seriously. The Catholic Church had better wake up!

I’m late to the ‘party’, because I only saw the movie tonight.

But ‘hermaphrodite’ is exactly how I interpreted the ending.

People are sometimes born with ambiguous sexual characteristics, and the actor playing “Benitez’ says very clearly in the film that when he was born, they had no way of knowing about things like that. He was raised as a boy, and that’s all he knew.

The Vatican politics were not the most interesting thing about the film, for me; everyone knows that politics there are as nasty as politics anywhere. But the human psychology of the various characters was fascinating; and the issue of someone who thought he was a man all his life, until a health crisis revealed that he was ‘different’, was something to think about, too.

(I wonder how many people commenting on this thread have actually bothered to read the book...)
