Watch the video closer:
At just under 100 feet the a/c is both at too high descent rate and the starboard wing dips; it never comes level again, and the right gear is crushed, ripping off the wing. The rotation/flip was inevitable. Amazing there was no death from the crash.
I have a friend who is a pilot, both fixed and rotary wing. He asserts that this was all weather, but the aspect of the video doesn’t demonstrate a crosswind: It appears to demonstrate a phenomenon I’ve never seen reported: Clear air low altitude wind shear. Usually, wind shear is associated with t-storms, but it looks like either the pilots were incompetent or a vertical downdraft either affected lift or pushed the plane down.
I suppose wake turbulence could have caused it, but all the reports fail to mention wake turbulence, focusing on the winds.
It’s a bit of a mystery...
I’ve watched the video a few times as well. To me, it looked like the plane was leaning at a much more significant angle that I’ve seen in other videos and landed much harder on that one gear. Obviously, their design to take some extra abuse, but was that over the design limits or some other maintenance issue.
I know people who are involved in similar roles in other transportation sectors. There is a time in place for a training flight, trip, drive, etc. in time to say “sorry, I’m gonna make this trip, landing, etc. Because of the weather. Watch very closely what I do, etc.”
They said, from experience, any students who complain about didn’t deserve the qualification. One friend I know did that for a bus company. The people who understood that maybe the middle of a bad snowstorm wasn’t the best time for the check ride turned out to be much better drivers in the end. A different trainer, was a bit more lax on the check rides and had multiple people they “qualified“ get fired or suspended for hitting things, luckily no people, before they got fired. The final straw was when they claimed the driver they qualified was competent, after they had taken out a couple parked cars, two other buses and ended up stuck on a guy wire for a utility pole.
Depending on how you look at it, the right side collapsed a split second earlier, causing the plane to roll hard to that side, the wing on that side dug into the runway and the plane rolled over and when it got fully rolled over the other wing snaped of as well. I could be wrong but that’s how I saw it.
When the landing gear collapsed and just before the plane rolled over the rear fuel tank ruptured and that’s what caused the fire and black smoke.
That plane came in too fast and hit hard.
Maybe the wind slammed it down.
The greatest troll of stupid media people ever, and kudos to the FAA person who caught on to it and confirmed the names.
When will be able to publicly identify the pilot and her training problems?
I watched that last night.
I think the Delta CEO will be gone by next Wednesday.
BTW, if you have TikTok, you need to go to Endeavor Air and check out their account. 🧐
