The land of California is cursed no more than the states that lie in the large swath of the US called "tornado alley" or the SE coast where hurricanes cause havoc every year, or the killer winters that strike the NE (all of which kill more people every year than earthquakes do). Nature is as nature does, and people heavily congregating in areas most susceptible to these this makes it worse. Of course it doesn't help in a state where the government has insane environmental and other bureaucratic policies. That's the real curse.
