A state of emergency has been declared on the Greek island of Santorini after days of consecutive earthquakes.

It comes after a magnitude 5.2 tremor was recorded at 21:09 local time (19:09 GMT) on Wednesday between the Greek islands of Amorgos and Santorini, making it the strongest in recent days. It is estimated to have occurred at a depth of 5km (3.1 miles).

The decree will be in effect until 3 March to "address the emergency needs and manage the consequences", officials said. More than 11,000 people have already left Santorini, with around 7,000 departing by ferry and 4,000 by air.

I just logged in to post this very thing. Per Volcanodiscovery.com there are signs of uplift that has occurred in since the quake swarm began 10 days ago due to magma movement.

I’ve been to Santorini three times and it is truly breathtaking. Also, the volcano is still very active and last erupted in 1950.

Thanks all. "More than 11,000 people have already left Santorini, with around 7,000 departing by ferry and 4,000 by air." -- that represents about half the permanent population.

Time to stock up on wine from Santorini while its available.

Santori wines

Assyrtiko

One of the finest noble white grapes of Europe, Assyrtiko’s origins began in Santorini. It dominates the Santorini landscape comprising 70% of all vineyard plantings and is grown in a field blend with the more than 30 other varieties native to the island. Not surprisingly, Santorini is where Assyrtiko gives its most unique expression of character. This is due to the climatic struggle that it must endure, as well as the influence of the island’s volcanic soil and microclimate. It has the unusual quality of maintaining high levels of alcohol and acidity at the same time, making it one of the few white grapes of the Mediterranean that also possess very long ageing potential.

Assyrtiko produces full-bodied, dry white wines with citrus aromas, combined with a distinct mineral character. Assyrtiko is also blended with Athiri and Aidani to make one of the world’s best sweet wines, Vinsanto, which also has its first origins in Santorini.

According to research carried out by the Agricultural University of Athens, in collaboration with the Department of Pharmacy and the Biochemistry of Thessaly, Assyrtiko, although white, has a high polyphenolic content, which creates an antioxidant reaction and therefore protection from cardiovascular diseases, similar to red wine.

Ambelia” In order to protect plants from strong winds and to limit their need for water, the vine growers of Santorini adapted and refined a primitive pruning technique, the “ambelia” or “kouloura”. The plants are pruned to form a low vegetable basket where grapes are protected and mature, without run the risk of being damaged by sand, which is carried by the wind.

Naturally, Santorini has some of the best volcanic cat box litter in the world!

There was a cataclysmic eruption of Santorini over 3000 years ago. I whipped the whole area and destroyed several civilizations. They even blame the ten plagues of Egypt on that eruption.

Could be magma making its way to the surface. The last eruption was over a thousand years ago but it was pretty big. I would find a way to leave if I lived there.
