The U.S. attorney is one of the most consequential figures in the District of Columbia’s criminal justice system. Washington might soon learn that lesson firsthand after Donald Trump’s eventual choice for the role — that is, his handpicked sheriff — assumes the reins from U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves. This week, Graves announced that he will officially step down on Jan. 16, four days before Trump steps up to take the oath of office.
A cautious and understated prosecutor, Graves will leave with numerous accomplishments under his belt. His targeting of repeat offenders has paid off with reductions in gun- and drug-related violence. But the credit he takes for D.C. recording “the least amount of total violent crime it has had in over 50 years” in 2024 must be shared with D.C. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith and her team of officers.
Graves can also boast of having made a priority of prosecuting politically motivated violence and destruction. His office was part of the largest investigation in Justice Department history, resulting in charges against nearly 1,600 people — and the conviction of more than 1,250 — involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, storming of the U.S. Capitol.
On that note, let us pause.
Trump has called Jan. 6 “a day of love,” labeled the rioters as “patriots,” and repeatedly promised to pardon some of those charged and convicted. Graves might well have decided to get going while the going is good, since U.S. attorneys traditionally resign at the beginning of a new White House administration. Some are asked to stay. But the odds of a Trump-led Justice Department asking the Jan. 6 prosecutor to stick around were as close to zero as possible.
Were that the end.
Graves’s departure leaves an opening...

Similar reaction.
Graves belongs in jail.
Rats deserting a sinking ship.
Works for me.
DC brought to justice?
Aw, ain’t it awful?
🥳🤸🤸♂️🎈🎈🧨🧨
Better bring big arms. They are probably rooted way deeper than we know. It’ll take more than a single term to ‘git ‘er done’.
Crime in DC went down over the last four years. Could it be due to Covid and there aren’t any victims to rob?
More likely that the DC cops were ordered to stop taking reports of crime.
Graves can also boast of having made a priority of prosecuting politically motivated violence and destruction.
........
Lol
Sorry if I’m missing it...do we know 47’s replacement for Graves?
Maybe at some point soon, they can stop calling the “Atty General’s Office” (executive branch), “The Dept of Justice” (the judicial branch).
The Left loves to blur the lines of constitutional separation of powers.
“ if there’s going to be retaliation against Trump’s perceived enemies in the government and/or the press, it’s going to start in downtown D.C. The U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia is the one who initiates prosecutions, conducts grand jury proceedings and, most importantly, requests indictments. Recall a 1985 observation by Sol Wachtler, then the chief justice of New York’s Supreme Court: “Any good prosecutor can get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich.”
Perceived enemies? No, any idiot knows they were real. They sowed the wind and will reap the whirlwind.
We need a firebrand in DC as US attorney. Also need to clean out AUSAs as much as possible. Any leaker must be fired, investigated and prosecuted.
RE: way deeper than we know
We’re going to need a bigger boat.
Thanks again to the four or five people here a couple of days ago who urged me to finally watch Jaws for the first time. I plan to do so soon.
Enter the gaping maw.
Is this the job that Bush ‘43 nominated a woman that was rejected? Hoping to put her on SCOTUS? Memory is lost.
Cowardly political hack finishes his dirty work and doesn’t stick around to face the music. Got it.
I hope Trump & Company make these Marxist globalists sorry they ever went to law school or showed their faces in DC. The lot of them.
“””A cautious and understated prosecutor, Graves”””
No need to read this WAPO bs any further than the above.
Exactly right ,100,000 govt workers paying games at home
means the DC savages had fewer suckers to terrorize.
The Bezos Compost is such cesspool of poorly educated lefties .
Can’t seem to get distance from Stormy Daniels references.
Wouldn’t Matt Gaetz be a hoot? Lol
I like your idea....
