Growing indications that the Azerbaijan Airlines flight that crashed this morning might have been brought down by some kind of AD fire
A Ukrainian drone attack on Grozny was ongoing
Tried to catch up on the subsequent threads and only saw the vid of the crash at the steep angle and the fireball.
Agreed on ADS-B (sort of knew about that), but you are saying AD around Russian airports within drone range of Ukraine doesn’t have any way to tell if an incoming blip is a friendly or neutral? (Probably I should have not said “IFF”, as I meant that in a more general way.)
There are reports of a Ukie drone attack @ or near Grozny but I’ve not seen confirmation - I have not been online much today (for good reason!) We’ll see — usually damage (etc.) vids turn up after an actual attack.
Plane was almost certainly hit near Grozny. Damage might seem non-extreme, and the plane was likely reasonably controllable for a good while, but leaking hydraulic fluid plus the other mechanical damage eventually was too much to overcome when they tried to land. Notably, they chose an airport with more open space around it than other’s nearer. Kudo’s to the pilots.
There was no risk anyway. NATO was not equipped, manned, budgeted, or anything else, to be an offensive threat to Russia, except as a counterpuncher. USA in the 2020’s was at near historic low defense spending as a % of GDP, and with much to worry about in the Western Pacific.

This is Victoria Nuland's war.

The problem with ADS-B or any other civilian air traffic control beacon system is that it is easily spoofed. Think about it. By their very nature, everyone has to know how to generate and interpret the signals. Military beacon systems, on the other hand, are encrypted and secured. When the Vincennes shot down that civilian airliner, the Americans repeatedly warned them on the international emergency frequency of 10 MHz that if they did not change course they would shoot them down. The Iranians may have thought they were bluffing and thought they would call the Americans bluff. Gotta know when to fold ‘em.
A Libyan airliner filled with passengers violated Israeli airspace around 1972 or so, and the Israelis intercepted it, told them to land in Israel, and when they failed to comply shot them down. Almost certainly the Libyan airliner was a provocation, they did not think the Israelis would have the nerve to shoot them down. The Israelis thought differently, and no one has tried that stunt since.
Recently, after the Iranians launched a missile attack against U.S. Forces in Iraq after the U.S. assassinated Soleimani, the Iranians shot down one of their own domestic airliners that was squawking ADS-B, mainly because they were on a hair trigger.
