Since this is happening in the U.S. wouldn’t ‘several inches’ be informative? And if one insists on using the oh-so-superior metric system, why not say ‘several decimeters’ of settlement?

These are the same idiots who unaccountably change the names of places without any warning. Like suddenly a city that has been called Bombay for a century of more is suddenly “Mumbai.” Or Peking becomes Beijing.
