And there are still fools on FR who say: "Ukraine should have kept its nukes" when the Soviet Union collapsed.
They didn't own them or control the codes, and in a completely corrupt country like Ukraine, they would quickly be sold to anyone offering $millions.
Who knows, maybe one did escape...
There were supposedly 82 weapons unaccounted after Ukraine gave up the 1,754 Soviet-manufactured units they had in storage on former Soviet bases in Ukraine.*
It is very likely that two or three of them wound up in places they were not supposed to be. After 40 years, they cannot be in operable condition without extensive remanufacturing, but the cores could still be used for "dirty bombs".
So, "Where's Waldo?"
*Pick whatever numbers you like. These are the ones I found. Somebody has a spreadsheet with exact model numbers and serial numbers for every unit. I don't have that spreadsheet or know anyone who does have it. A general view is "1700+ nuclear weapons, 80+ unaccounted".
