De Soto, a Republican, won a three-candidate Republican primary race to represent the state’s 91st district.

This is how Dems manipulate to get more liberal candidates in Illinois, in solid Republican areas. If there is a strong candidate running uncontested against a weak one/RINO type, the Dems have a person run as a “strong” Republican, too, in the primaries to split the vote, and increase the odds the weaker candidate will win. Or in this case get lucky and win directly.

No way to stop it as anyone can run on whatever ticket they please, even if the party/ticket they choose doesn’t like them.
