The World’s 50 Most Valuable Sports Teams 2024
Forbes ^ | 12/12/2024 | Brett Knight and Justin Teitelbaum

Posted on 12/12/2024 12:38:42 PM PST by DFG

For the ninth straight year, the Dallas Cowboys are the world’s most valuable sports team, worth an estimated $10.1 billion—the first to cross the 11-figure threshold and $1.3 billion beyond their closest competition. But there is plenty of movement among the top 50 teams, with 12 NBA franchises now flooding the ranking, double the six on last year’s list and led by the Golden State Warriors, worth an estimated $8.8 billion and No. 2 overall.

To be fair, that increase is due in part to a change in the timing of Forbes’ list, but basketball’s march up the financial leaderboard also reflects real gains by the NBA’s teams. The league’s 30 franchises were worth $4.4 billion on average this year, a 15% increase over 2023 and a staggering 596% jump from a decade ago (a 21% compound annual return). No other sport represented among the 50 most valuable teams comes close to that appreciation.

-- SNIP --

The influx of NBA teams comes at the expense of Major League Baseball, which lost two teams in the top 50 (the Chicago Cubs and the San Francisco Giants); Formula 1, which had both of its outfits fall out (Ferrari and Mercedes); and the NFL, which is now missing the Buffalo Bills. (Because of a tie at No. 50 this year between the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals and the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, six new teams join the ranking while only five teams depart.)

-- SNIP --

The NFL, however, continues to dominate the list with 29 franchises—58% of the top 50. Soccer, which had eight clubs in the top 50 a decade ago, including the top three spots, now has six teams spread across four leagues, with Real Madrid of Spain’s La Liga leading the way at $6.6 billion, tied for 12th overall.

Part of why I cannot believe how bad the cowboys are so bad is the continuous reality that they are by far the most valuable sport franchise.

Even the mavericks and Texas rangers do better with wealth.

Its impossible.

You could probably write a formula to predict most of this list. One of the biggest factors would be market size (equaling TV contracts, ticket sales, merchandising). Thus the dominance of NY and LA, for example. Another big factor would be winning percentage and related to that would be number of championship appearances in recent decades. More points for Championship wins.

Everyone in the Boston market wants John Henry to sell the Red Sox.
John Henry cares more about Liverpool now than the Sox.

So value has nothing to do with recent performance.

So the Jets is based 100% on market and 0% on performance.

LOL!

Basically.

Another outlier would be the Browns. Mid-market at best, and terrible track record, yet they are ranked higher than the likes of LA Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, or Chicago Bulls.

I haven’t watched a ball game since 1962 for that reason no team is worth what they get paid to play a ball game.

It isn’t like their a fireman or a cop or any real dangerous job.

Some of these numbers are misleading because they may include assets of these franchises other than the teams themselves. I believe a big chunk of the book value of the Dallas Cowboys is their stadium (whereas most NFL teams play in public venues). And I’m sure the high ranking of the NY Yankees is based on their TV and radio network.

Can you imagine what the Cowboys would be worth if they didn’t suck?

Having once been an avid LA Rams fan, I always root against the Pokes, and I now do so with more enthusiasm after their owner knelt with them to protest the National Anthem. I also root against the Washington Football Team.

Being from the L.A. area, hard to believe the Rams are the highest valued team in the area. They can’t fill the stadium half full with their own fans (but they fill the stands...meh) L.A. is a destination city for the visiting Team. The Rams being worth more than the Dodgers, something is amiss.

What this tells me is the Cowboys have the most gullible fans in professional sports. And they’re bringing back McCarthy!

We Liverpool fans feel that the Red Sox is the Pride and Joy of FSG and we are no fans of John Henry. Fenway Sports Group are notoriously cheap when it comes to Liverpool. We didn’t think Henry would ever offer Mohammad Salah a new contract.
