Serving on the Front Lines is not as nice as the Liberal lawyers think. "You can't handle the truth." I served three years on the East/West German Border. The God darn Soviets were not playing games or screwing around.

Ummmm...the setting was Cuba, not the East/West German Border.

An experience completely unrelated to the movie in a country far removed from the plot?

Galloway:
Tell your friend not to get cute down there, the Marines at Gitmo are fanatical.

Lt. Weinberg:
Fanatical about what?

Galloway:
About being Marines

The Col. Jessup character is supposed to be the villain. But his famous courtroom outburst actually contains a lot of truth:

“Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, Lieutenant Weinberg? I have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know — that Santiago’s death, while tragic, probably saved lives; and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives.
You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall — you need me on that wall.
We use words like “honor,” “code,” “loyalty.” We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punch line.
I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it.
I would rather that you just said “thank you” and went on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand the post. Either way, I don’t give a DAMN what you think you’re entitled to!

This movie, while well done and entertaining, is nothing but a Rob Reiner wet dream. It is a hit piece on the military, and particularly the Marine Corps. Aside from many other problematic issues, the idea that Col. Jessep would actually respond in any way that would implicate himself is absurd.

In the film one of the issues involved a situation where the defendant's "mirror" engaged. The idea expressed by pol-92064 is that the scenes and situations presented in the film are serious business, and he has personal experience with them. I have a friend who served on the Korean DMZ. It was the very same situation.

And yet you seem to think you are entitled to call him out because you imagine his experience isn't applicable when it clearly is.

Perhaps instead of doubling down on dumb, you should have just said "thank you" and then gone on your way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, it's likely no one here gives a damn what you think you're entitled to.

I've stood my post and I've neither bragged nor complained after having done so.

I disagree that this a hit piece on the military. The soldier in the film that was code reded accidentally died of a chemical reaction. Soldiers perform code reds in the military. The character Colonel Jessup was explaining why we do what we do. I have stood in a guard tower along a fence line. It wasn’t in Cuba, it was in Germany. It is the same issue about honor and code while doing your duty. IMHO.

Can’t argue with someone who has lived it. We came quite close to holding a blanket party on one guy in boot who was “allergic” to soap and water.

Thank you for the clarification, and also your service. I was USN, gator Navy. Had quite a few friends who are Marines. Good times in the Med and North Atlantic.

I appreciate all of the Navy personal that served during the 80’s in the Med, Red Sea and Gulf. That did a hell of a job.
