Actually there’s a way if the involved agencies are interested enough to do the work
Years ago an man was arrested for shooting at military aircraft that flew over his farm. The military calculated the angle , timing and height of the planes when the were hit and figured out where the shots came from
Wish I could give the specifics but it’s been many years ago and my memory is going
That sounds like a story that made it into Reader's Digest decades ago. It may not have been in the United States.
Maintenance crews at an airbase found bullet holes in some of their aircraft. After it was repeated, they looked at the flight pattern and figured it was from a nearby ranch.
The authorities, along with a few military staff from the base, visited the rancher who called in an old ranch hand who was the only one who had been in the flight path area. The old ranch hand admitted to doing it, saying the jets scattered the sheep, some of which he had to put down due to their injuries while fleeing.
The military was amazed that the old rancher was able to draw a bead and lead the aircraft to put rounds into them. They were going to arrest him but he insisted he shot away from the pilots as evidenced in their photographs. He also he asked them how he could put bullets into the side of their planes unless they were flying so low to the ground.
The pilots agreed not to violate the altitude minimums and the old ranch hand agreed not to shoot at them anymore. After that, he'd wave while they did rolls or wagged their wings high overhead when passing the ranch.
