Barack and Michelle Obama on Wednesday called on Americans to listen to one another and abide by democratic norms in a statement reacting to Donald Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the presidential election.
The former president and first lady began by congratulating the president-elect and his running mate, JD Vance.
“This is obviously not the outcome we had hoped for, given our profound disagreements with the Republican ticket on a whole host of issues. But living in a democracy is about recognizing that our point of view won’t always win out, and being willing to accept the peaceful transfer of power,” they said.
The Obamas said they were incredibly proud of Vice President Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, lauding their “extraordinary” public service and “remarkable campaign.” They also thanked all the staff and volunteers who supported their efforts.
“As I said on the campaign trail, America has been through a lot over the last few years — from a historic pandemic and price hikes resulting from the pandemic, to rapid change and the feeling a lot of folks have that, no matter how hard they work, treading water is the best they can do,” the statement said.
“Those conditions have created headwinds for democratic incumbents around the world, and last night showed that America is not immune.”
They finished with some “good news,” noting that those problems are solvable.
“But only if we listen to each other, and only if we abide by the core constitutional principles and democratic norms that made this country great,” they wrote.

Let the sea rise locally on the shores of Martha’s Vineyard.....
The Brothas gave big Mike and Barry the middle finger.
Just drop dead already. Are they even human?
"Over the last few years."
LOL...he has NO self-awareness. Who was in charge the "last few years," Barry? Any idea?

What is “democratic” depends on the values one attaches to democracy. The distinction that determines the answer is between minimalist and maximalist conceptions of democracy. Defending democracy requires a positive, forward-looking program of reform.
Both of them are so filled with hate.
Someone better take the drano away.
One’s not a woman....and the other is not a man...
“the peaceful transfer of power”
Talking points have gone out.
I hope the Trump DOJ goes after these grifters and destroys them. Give them the same treatment they gave Trump. Every transaction, every foreign bribe, every LLC, Larry Sinclair, his drug dealing, etc. Raid his mansions and make the jerk who raided Mar A Lago go through Big Mike’s underwear drawer.
Good to hear from the Big Guy.
“Democratic norms”???
Anything Dems want is anything except ‘normal’.
Yeah. Because Obozo was so bipartisan himself. Spare me, you agent of Iran.
Failed to take any responsibility for their failed policies.
You two let color triumph over competency. You were so engaged at installing an unqualified woman you didn’t even really vet her. And when you get kickback from the black community, you go talking to young men like you’re their wise old daddy, scolding them, or you just come out and say you’re misogynistic. A word you’ve NEVER used in conjunction with MISANDRY. Even the best thing you could have done is to axe the Walz nomination and you couldn’t even do that.
Just take your millions and lounge around there up at Martha’s Vineyard and STFU. You don’t speak for anybody.
Who?
Who?
Nobody goes to Martha’s Vineyard this time of year.
They are probably in Hawaii.
