Inside the Last-Ditch Hunt by Harris and Trump for Undecided Voters
The New York Times ^ | Oct. 21, 2024, 5:02 a.m. ET | Reid J. Epstein and Shane Goldmacher

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald J. Trump are carrying out a virtual house-to-house hunt for the final few voters who are still up for grabs, guided by months of painstaking research about these elusive Americans.

Inside the Delaware headquarters of Ms. Harris’s campaign, analysts have spent 18 months curating a list of which television shows and podcasts voters consume in the battleground states. Her team has assigned every voter in these states a “contactability score” from 0 to 100 to determine just how hard that person will be to reach — and who is best to deliver her closing message.

The results are guiding Ms. Harris’s media and travel schedule, as well as campaign stops by brand-name supporters. For instance, the movie star Julia Roberts and the basketball great Magic Johnson earned high marks among certain voters, so they have been deployed to swing states.

At Mr. Trump’s headquarters, in South Florida, his team recently refreshed its model of the battleground electorate and found that just 5 percent of voters were still undecided, half as many as in August. The Trump team calls them the “target persuadables” — younger, more racially diverse people with lower incomes who tend to use streaming services and social media. Mr. Trump has made appearance after appearance on those platforms, including on podcasts aimed at young men.

This furious search for a fickle sliver of the country has grown more urgent because the presidential contest is as close as any since the advent of modern polling, with the two candidates nearly deadlocked across the battleground states. The election could now ride on undecided Americans who have unplugged almost entirely from political news — making them tricky to find even for billion-dollar campaigns.

Can anyone with an IQ above 70 honestly be an undecided?

I can understand they can be an “I don’t care”. I get that one, but not “undecided”.

So if I streamed “Pretty Woman” once a couple of years ago, and you-tubed a video of MJ recalling how he got his ass handed to him by Larry Bird, does this give me a 100 ‘contactability’ score?

Are GOOG and MSFT going to provide the same sort of personal info gratis to the Trump campaign?

I think there's actually a lot of undecideds out there, though not really in a traditional sense.

The biggest bloc is people who hate Trump as a person, but feel like Harris would be a disaster. A lot of those people may just not vote, but they are gettable by either campaign with the right persuasion. The Harris campaign has been pushing hard to get these people and it's not really working, in part because Harris is so bad at retail politics and she isn't improving.

I loved that turn of words, “Retail politics”. I think your post also nails it.

I might applaud Magic Johnson & Julia Roberts for their success in their respective fields of endeavor——

BUT I REALLY DO NOT GIVE A RAT’S BEHIND WHO THEY WISH TO VOTE FOR.

The only truly “undecided voters” at this point are dead, comatose, severely retarded, or in the advanced stages of dementia. They will all vote for Kamabla, early and often.

Most voters that are capable of responding to pollsters and say that they are undecided either (a) don’t want to admit that they have no intention of voting, or (b) are too polite to say “None of your f’ing business.” Most of the former group will also vote for Kamabla. Most of the latter group will vote for Trump.

Most voters who refuse to respond to polls and hang up whenever pollsters call them will also vote for Trump.

Kamabla already did The View. It did not go well.

Although they were appropriately fawning and prefaced nearly every question with "As we all know, Trump is an evil racist and a threat to democracy..." they occasionally went off script and asked questions that were apparently not preapproved and that Kamabla had not rehearsed responses for. Or Kamabla just couldn't remember how she was scripted to respond without a teleprompter.

Of course, whenever Kamabla gave a rambling, word salad non-response, they ignored it and went back to the scripted questions.

It is remarkable, but there are people far enough removed from info to be undecided.

I believe that there are NOT any “undecided” voters. I believe some voters are apathetic and not going to vote because they don’t think that they can make a difference. Motivating your base to get the message out that their vote is needed and necessary is going to gather more votes than going after Undecideds.

article: “just 5 percent of voters were still undecided”

I think it is less than one percent who are truly undecided...and what they are undecided about is whether they will vote at all.

To be undecided in these times means stunningly low interest in politics.
