The MONTHLY Gardening Thread is a gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to/removed from our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a MONTH Ping List, but we DO post to the thread all throughout the month. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

We are about to get another huge heat wave in So Cal, temps over 100 degrees! It's never ending...
Everything here is still all about maintenance with the relentless heat and hot winds.
Silk floss tree is blooming -meaning I have to sweep off the sidewalk each day. Flowers are amazing and look like orchids:
Meanwhile, decorating for Halloween while waiting for the weather to cool down so I can plant a winter garden
Good Morning! :-)
Good morning! First of October and it’s windy and cool!
😊
Welcome October!
Fall cleanup is in full swing now. I have leaves and branches down all over my yard. I’ve already done two days of rounds of raking. Yesterday, I picked up enough fallen branches and twigs to have a bonfire, which I’m not allowed to do here. So there will be enough kindling to get me through the winter for sure.
And that was just the front yard near the driveway! Side yards and back have even more! Fun, fun, fun! (Good exercise though!)
My son introduced me to this website....
Curmudge inn Alaska
https://www.youtube.com/@curmudgeinnak
These folks live off the grid in Alaska and share how they prepare for the winter and more. I just started watching the video on how they lay in supplies for the winter. Makes my Sam’s club runs pale in comparison.
I’m getting my garlic in this week.
Otherwise, cleaning up the beds and generally getting the ground ready for crops in the spring.
This spring, I need to not be in such a hurry to get stuff in. A cold snap in spring really sets stuff back even with covering it.
I’ll be putting in my seed order very soon, too. God knows what will happen this election cycle.
Just curious if you know, if I order seeds now, particularly onion seeds, will they be fresh, and marked for next year?
My beans are almost spent. The weather has been warm enough but the days are just getting too short. The lettuce is doing just fine though and I still have a few tomatoes on a couple plants that are stragglers and ripening.
Wow, I’m early for a change! Looking forward to my fall tomato crop. Took me by surprise to see so many. There are some Abe Lincolns, and I think a couple of Early Girls. Even if they don’t get any real size on them, I’ll still enjoy the heck out of them. :-)
Gorgeous flower!
Yay October, my favorite month overall. Now, if we can just get some gorgeous October weather .... sunny days with deep blue skies & crisp sweater weather temps, maybe a light breeze to swirl the fall-colored leaves around a bit as they fall ....
The sunlight in the afternoon is already ‘different’ .... slanting in more rather than directly overhead so much. I especially notice the light difference on the mountains.
Internet account is set up. Mesh WiFi system on order, should be here Thursday & I hope to connect over the weekend. We are going to a cousin’s birthday celebration Saturday ... typical ‘country folk’ low key .... drop in between 1 & 4, snacks & drinks provided, bring a chair & sit a spell/visit. :-)
That is a beautiful presentation - I can see that taco board decimated in short order by a party crowd!
Thanks! I love those kinds of videos. :)
Nice to see you! :)
Make two?
“Just curious if you know, if I order seeds now, particularly onion seeds, will they be fresh, and marked for next year?”
We never released ‘current year’ seeds until January of the year. Not sure what other seed operations do. You could call or email them before you place your order, but since onion seeds hold their viability for a very long time, I personally wouldn’t worry about it.
I heard that they’re only good for a year.
