NYC rent continues to rise: Here’s how much you need to earn to leave in each borough

Anyone who’s tried to rent an apartment in New York City knows that it’s highly competitive and highly priced, and the latest data suggests this market is showing no signs of letting up.

In August 2024, the median asking rent for apartments in four New York City boroughs — Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, and Brooklyn — was $3,425, a $76 increase from a year ago.

The Big Apple’s median rent price is nearly double the national median of $1,753; it is one of the only major cities where rents are still rising.

“In contrast to the overall declining trend seen across the top 50 markets, the median asking rent in New York City continues to rise annually, increasing by $76, or 2.3%, compared to a year ago,” notes Realtor.com economist Jiayi Xu in her analysis. “Although New York City was one of the rental markets that saw the steepest rent declines during the [COVID-19] pandemic, its median asking rent rebounded to pre-pandemic levels by spring 2022 and has continued to rise annually since then.”

“…to LEAVE in each borough?”

This is written by ChatGPT.

What the article left out was the average size of an apartment is probably no larger than most people’s master bedroom

If you live in NYC you are an idiot and deserve to pay out the nose.

I wouldn’t want to live in an anthill like NYC even if I could afford it - and that goes for the great city it once was, too.

You know everyone has something to say bad about NY. I get it, and I know it’s true.

But here’s the thing. Everyone has something to say bad about Philadelphia, Seattle, San Francisco, New Jersey, Las Angeles, Portland...

The bad things they say are true. But these are our American cities and they are being destroyed by the liberals. How long can we let our own cities go down the drain? How long can we say bad things and say ‘move’ or ‘don’t go there’ and watch America itself die?

Of course my hope is in Trump, that he gets elected. That the liberal politicians bad policies will out themselves and people in those cities will get wise and vote in better leaders. I don’t see it happening much and with Soros buying radio stations people will hear only propaganda worries me.

We’ll see if they ‘get wise’. A city doesn’t get like this in one or two election cycles.

Cities wind up like this because the people who live in them vote stupidly and tolerate the mess.

I’m well aware of how it happens but the point is the country is destroyed city by city. It’s not in my heart to watch and say glad I don’t live there because eventually it’s all gone.

I don’t see how you ‘fix stupid’. The people there have to do it on their own; and now that many practically savage people have been inserted into the populations, the responsible people have it even harder.

Some of the apartments are about the size of a walk-in closet.

Freudian slip - the basic idea in the writers mind is that ‘we gotta get out of here...’

And if you can’t afford to “leave” you have to live there.

(and that costs even more)

The way you fix ‘stupid’ is educate the people which is why the communist admin we have now is so intent on propaganda. The people are not being made aware of their policies that are hurting the country, everywhere. That is why Soros bought the radio stations and makes the FCC which huried it through as suspect.

People have to want to be educated, for anything to stick.

How are you going to educate them, beyond having them suffer what they’ve brought on themselves?

Renters often have choices.

The rents are high because the wages and salaries in the area are high.

NYC is nice if you’re rich. My Ivy League graduate nephew lives there. He owns 2 houses. Works on Wallstreet about 80 hours a week, but he makes $700k a year…
