Word Salad: What It Is and Why It Happens

Word salad is a term used to describe a confused or meaningless mixture of words and phrases when speaking.1 Word salads can be found in various contexts but are especially common among people with certain mental health conditions or neurological disorders such as schizophrenia ordementia.

Those affected may struggle to communicate their thoughts coherently, leading to sentences that lack logical structure, contain some nonsensical words and phrases, and make little sense overall. Word salads are often accompanied by other symptoms related to the underlying illness and can cause distress for both the speaker and those around them.

Has she always talked this way or is she talking this way now to distract from the fact that she never answers a question directly?

I tried to talk “word salad”. It is hard to do. Harris does it with ease.

No where in the article is ‘intelligence quotient’ (IQ) mentioned. While everything in the article might be true and written by an MD, perhaps Khumulah (African version) is just plain damned dumb.

My guess is she has normal mental abilities, but she is struggling to communicate because she doesn’t want to say what she actually thinks, and on top of that she is trying to please too many different constituencies. These pressures result in her word salads.

Although not quite the same as what Harris does, I know people who try to speak without using any nouns and, sometimes, without any verbs —

“You know, she was, like, and anyway, her sister was there and ... you know that thing? Well, she had one and ... but the point is, whatever. Because she told her that we were and then all of a sudden, you know, it’s, like, whatever. And I’m, like, “sure” but anyway. The whole thing was stupid.”

I don’t know what makes a brain work like that.

I also encounter many people who sort of stutter in full phrases and they try to say and they try to say and they ... and they try ... and they to say they try to say ... and they try to say something but it’s a struggle.

It’s also used by lazy, unprepared individuals who think they can fool people into thinking they know a thing or two; or who want to hide their real intent. These people, in some cases, are also evil.

Kamala went to Howard University?

Why does a person who isn't black go to a historically black university (HBCU)?

Because they weren't accepted to Princeton, Yale, or Oakland Junior College...and acceptance to Howard is automatic for high school graduates.

You make very good points. These also might be why she comes out with directly memorized paragraphs such as “I grew up in a middle class home”.

Likely the result of relatively low inteligence coupled with a lack of self-confidence backed by a desperate need to sound thoughtful and wise when you know you’re neither. The nervous cackling is a dead giveaway.

My guess is that she starts the day off with a Big Toke on her favorite Hash Pipe and periodically “refreshes” the high.
