Reinsdorf: 'No one is happy' with results of 2024 campaign (Closing in on a modern baseball record)

CHICAGO – There have been a number of recent requests to speak with White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, which stands to reason as his team fell to 33-114 after a 6-4 loss to the Guardians on Wednesday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Following this franchise-worst 15th straight home setback, Reinsdorf issued the following statement through the team.

“Everyone in this organization is extremely unhappy with the results of this season, that goes without saying. This year has been very painful for all, especially our fans. We did not arrive here overnight, and solutions won’t happen overnight either

They ARE closing in on a modern baseball record for most losses in a season. Only six games to go before tying the 40-120-1 1962 New York Mets for baseball in the two league era.

They won't make the all-time record of 20-134 for another Cleveland team because it is now impossible to reach the 134 mark with only 15 games remaining in the schedule. But they COULD get to 129. Go Sox!

That’s certainly not what Ray Kroc would be saying....

1974:

The Padres were once again clobbered in their home opener on April 9, losing 9-5. Kroc spent the game stewing as his team committed such foibles as forgetting the number of outs, and blowing a chance to score with the bases loaded. With the Astros holding onto a 9-2 lead in the ninth, Kroc was finally set off after a pinch runner who’d just entered the game was picked off at first. He stormed from the owners box to the PA booth, grabbed the microphone, and addressed Padres fans as their team’s owner for the first time.

“Fans, I suffer with you. I’ve never seen such stupid ballplaying in my life,” he said. After a streaker briefly interrupted him—Kroc screamed for the man to be thrown in jail—he continued to roast his team. “I have good news and bad news,” he said. “The good news is that the Dodgers drew 31,000 for their opener and we’ve drawn 39,000 for ours. The bad news is that this is the most stupid baseball playing I’ve ever seen.”

Average attendance to the home games of the old (1899) Cleveland Spiders was 75 people, compared to 11,389 for the 1962 New York Mets, compared to 16,840 (so far) for the 2024 Chicago White Sox.

So, yeah, people WILL pay to watch train wrecks.

San Diego STILL managed to finish at 60-102 that year.

Still better than some of the worst teams of the Cubs and A's. But, yeah, Kroc was quite the character.

I’m sure it’s a bit of a downer to play for any team with a losing record - but wow, the white Sox are really in rough shape.

Even with the paychecks these players are getting, it’s gotta be hard to stay motivated in a season like this one.

I think there is a decent sized group of MLB fans who are not necessarily hard core team fanatics that live and die with every win and loss, but people who are just looking for a nice summer night out at the ballpark with family or friends, enjoying the food, drinks, atmosphere, and things like fireworks night or bobblehead night. Winning is just a bonus.

I wonder what the Sox payroll is compared to other teams in the league ?

Since there was no indication of a purposeful rebuilding phase (Astros 2014-2017), I can only assume the owner is too cheap.

Yeah, my late wife and I used to do that a couple of nights a year with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Once the city went woke in the wake of the 2020 riots and covid, we no longer felt safe doing so.

But yeah, late in the season, you could get great tickets from the scalpers for as little as $10 each and so-so tickets for $5. Parking in the U.S. Steel tower was $7 after 5 pm and you could take the "T" for free right across the street from PNC Park. Throw in a $1 hot dog night and game giveaways and you had a great evening.

White Sox $134 million, #18 of 30 teams.

Guardians $107 million. 84 wins, 63 losses.

80-66 Mets $316 million. #1 of 30.

This is the same Ray Kroc that founded McDonald’s right? I never knew he owned a baseball team. And my favorite ballplayer was on that team that year! (A 22-year-old Dave Winfield, sent to the major leagues directly out of college. He wasn’t bad that year, 22 home runs and a .265 average in a pitcher’s era, but he’d improve every year for the next six years, until getting robbed for the MVP by Keith Hernandez, who had 0.7 fewer WAR, 13 fewer RBI, .045 lower SLG, .033 lower OPS. Both would win gold gloves.)

Yeah, they would. Not just because it is Chicago.

But it is southside old Chicago. In the bader part of town. And if you go down there, you'd better just beware of a man name o' LeRoy Brown.
