EVANSTON, Ill. - Tens of thousands of people woke up without power Wednesday morning after late-night storms blew through the Chicago area, downing trees and causing damage.

ComEd reports 23,332 people were experiencing outages as of 6 a.m. Wednesday. At 10 p.m. last night, more than 40,000 customers were without power. You can tap here to check out current outages.

Wind gusts of up to 60 mph, scattered lightning and even hail came down in several rounds of storms across the area. Cook, DuPage and Lake counties were all under Severe Thunderstorm Warnings.

Large trees were brought down in Evanston, including one near Northwestern University's John Evans Alumni Center.

Service on the CTA Yellow Line was temporarily halted around 5 a.m. due to storm debris scattered across the tracks.

Chicago broke a heat record on Tuesday, with temperatures at O'Hare Airport reaching 99 degrees, surpassing the previous record of 97 degrees set on August 27, 1973.

1973 had been the hottest on record until yesterday.

1973 was when the last record high was set.

That’s all it’s saying.

And it’s only for that day, not the city as a whole for the whole summer.

Those records drive me nuts. Because they want to use it to scream “climate change”

I wonder if you got what we (Twin Cities) go.

On Monday night around 8PM, we had a line of severe thunderstorms go thru, knocking down trees, causing electrical outages, etc.

On Tuesday morning about 5AM, we had another line of severe thunderstorms go thru, doing much of the same. the Minnesota State Fair had to delay its opening by several hours.

I was outside around 4:45AM walking the dog. The lightning out to the west was very vivid.

God’s way of cleaning out the filth and debris from some dog and pony show the city had recently.

Lol yeah the storm certainly Disturbed my sleep. My portable AC unit kept shutting off and and then back on. It finally developed a tapping noise that freaked me out so I had to shut it off. At about 2 am my alarm clock radio came on, and it wasn’t even set. Haven’t used an alarm in ages.

That’s a lie. I remember a summer oh maybe 20 years ago, probably more, when the bank signs showed we reached 101 one summer day.

I just posted a pretty ignorant comment then lol. When they talk about breaking records during a season, imo to narrow down to a specific day is essentially meaningless when you’re still in that season.

I know.

But a record high for one day is not significant but that doesn’t stop them from fear mongering.

It wasn’t ignorant, just a common mistake.

And considering they do it with the intent of alarmism, they are doing it to deceive anyways.

And you’re correct that the record high for ONE day is not statistically significant. Sometimes I’m even surprised at how low a record high was for a particular day. It’s just the luck of the draw.
