Electric car sales forecast slashed as drivers turn to secondhand market
Car makers have slashed their forecast for electric car sales this year amid an ongoing slowdown in demand.
The Society for Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) now predicts electric vehicles (EVs) will account for 18.5pc of the new car market in 2024, down from an earlier prediction of 19.8pc.
EV registrations surged higher in July but sales to private consumers continued to slump.
In figures published on Monday, the SMMT also revised down its forecast for the 2024 new car market as a whole, from 1.984m vehicle sales to 1.968m.
Within that estimate, the projected number of EV sales has fallen from roughly 393,000 vehicles to 364,000.
Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, said the figures still represented annual growth but warned that weakening demand for EVs among private consumers – despite heavy discounting by car makers – remained the industry’s “overriding concern”.
And that’s the thing, manufacturers are throwing insane amounts of cash to sell EVs. And I mean insane. Leases that look more like for a $24K car, not a $45K+ vehicle.
Mr Hawes said: “More people than ever are buying and driving EVs but we still need the pace of change to quicken, or else the UK’s climate change ambitions are threatened and manufacturers’ ability to hit regulated EV targets is at risk.
“Achieving market transition at the pace demanded requires greater support for consumers and action on incentives and infrastructure is needed now.”
How about he and the rest mind their own business? And why wasn’t Hawes asked if he’s driving an EV himself?

I ditched my hybrid a year ago, just before prices crashed, actually sold it for more than paid. Lucky me, now it’d be worth pennies on the dollar.

Nothing like cold hard experience opening their eyes to the disadvantages of a coal-charged, battery-powered vehicle.
Also, who in their right mind would ever buy a ‘used’ EV—given what it costs to buy a new battery for it,,,,,,,between $10,000 and $20,000!

In a few years we will be like Cuba. Home machining our own parts to keep stuff running just so we can get supplies and eat.
That pretty girl looks so attractive but once you hook up with her the reality is often much worse.

Unless people have the ability to home machine specialized chips, sensors and circuit boards we're going to be a lot worse off than Cuba. It's a lot easier to home build a float chamber or choke lever for a '50s vintage carbeurator than it is to crank out an electromagnetic solenoid valve for a modern fuel injection system.
Just go old school. Convert them to crank triggers with carbs or throttle body injection and throw away the computers and injectors. Easy to do with minimal knowledge and tools....
Fuel, spark and compression and it will run. I have run lawnmower engines off a shop rag in the intake that was soaking up gas by capillary/vapor action from a beer can...

Such a boomer skree at least be accurate the US grid is dominated by natural gas at 42%, coal is less than 16% coal, nuclear is 18% and all forms of renewables is 22%. This is actual megawatt hours delivered and consumed not installed capacity. So your coal powered is flat out wrong. Factually an EV is 40% nuclear and renewable charge charged with zero air emissions from those sources. Or 42% natural gas charged with 65% combined cycle gas turbine efficiency and near zero air emissions from modern gas turbines. Gas turbines being two orders of magnitude cleaner than diesels even with SCR and particulate filters. Add in the demonstrable fact that 65% eff turbine plus less than 5% grid transport losses over 200km to the plug and 8% loss plug to pack. The well to wheel of an EV is one third the BTU per mile vs petrol on a LHV btu for btu basis when compared to natural gas turbine electricity. So you burn one third less fuel why because no ICE anywhere gets close to 65% thermal efficiency you can throw away 8% and 5% and still be above the 25% eff of an ICE driving wheels. Google scholar is full of peer reviewed facts on this very subject.
This is all moot when you can charge an EV off solar panels on the roof above it. Mine is fully charged every day off the system of panels on the steel building above it. Only on road trips will it ever see a tesla supercharger. It cost me zero cents per mile when solar charged the system payed for itself already. And is turning a nice profit as Texas rates hit 20 cents per kwh it hurts to not sell the power at those kinda rates or higher vs charging during the day. So really the opportunity cost of not selling the power vs using it myself is the true cost. I also have battery banks for prepper reasons I actually charge those overnight at 4 cents per kwh and then sell the solar during the day for 50 to 90 cents. So my real operating cost for the EV is those night kWh offsetting the day ones. And the cycle life of the battery banks which are on loan while I torture test them for a friends solar company. I cycle them 80% hard and fast during peak hours then charge off peak for next to nothing largely using cheap night time wind at 3 to 5 cents per kwh.
Here is one looking at trains which are much more efficient than automobiles a diesel is only 26% WTW that’s with an ICE twice as efficient as a light duty petrol motor.

Lol that’s cute you think state’s like California will still let people title,licence , register and operate on state roads a ICE vehicle older than 20XX. They already do not allow the title,reg or operation of any diesel older than 2010 inside the state borders. With HUGE penalties and vehicle confiscation for none compliant. The red state’s might let Cuba happen but the blue ones won’t and they will use every technical means to enforce it. Real time licence plate readers are already common in patrol cars add in London and NYC style stop light cameras and pedestal cameras at all the city and hwy crossing points. No licence plate you say...that would bet that vehicle impounded on the spot and a class A jail trip to boot. You won’t be able to Cuba your way out bank on that. This is why I own an EV and solar panels it’s something fedzilla cannot turn off the sun I have a 375 mile range from my roof top that no one can turn off not unless they go full matrix and blacken the sky’s with sulfur or ash.

I was waiting for that point. I think it is cute you think they will actually be able to control it. They won’t have a choice. Just like third worlds and Cuba, there will be so much mass noncompliance they will not be able to police it. “Registration” will become a thing of the past. There will be so much noncompliance they won’t even be able to get tow companies to waste the time, money, and storage space to come pick them all up at their own expense. They will quit responding to the calls and LE will quit calling these cars in because it does no good anyhow. Cause and effect.
Building codes will go out the door also. Think third world compliance standards. There are very few.

Then they will arrest people the state and their local / state level goons love arresting people it’s a huge industry the prison industrial complex is very real. Private prisons run for profit can just build more and more jail space. Plus asset forfeiture will be used for repeat offenders.
You obviously have never worked for the system. I spent a good chunk of my youth in military, County LEO and fedgov level enforcement if there is a will the state will find a way with plenty of willing storm troopers to enforce it for a high wage. I woke up to that cold reality years ago and set about making sure I was independently wealthy, a multinational passport holder with wealth/ assets held world wide and a professional skill set with the degrees to back it up useful and desired globally. My primary home is off grid capable and I could leave America tonight and never look back if the iron curtain was coming down. Don’t think for one second the commies here won’t repeat the USSR type iron curtain along with all the asset freezing and bank account freezes. Commies only respect force at the barrel of a gun as famously said by Mao that is what it will take eventually mass disobedience will only get people J6’d in mass. Again it won’t matter. It will be EVERYONE in non-compliance, they will not have room for all the offenders or the money to incarcerate them. Tow companies ARE NOT going to pick up all these impounded vehicles for costs out of their own pockets. Let alone have enough room for them all. You won’t be able to navigate the city streets for all the vehicles parked in the way.
Mass non-compliance is pretty hard for them to thwart. It will be just like the CB radio non-compliance. There was no way to police the mass non-compliance so they just stopped enforcing it. Same with the Covid lock downs. No one paid any attention to it so they did not enforce it.
Mass non-compliance is a very powerful tool we should actually be using right now for certain regulations. Hit them so hard they just give up and turn their heads. And that is exactly what happens. Just all the paperwork alone is enough for them to turn their heads because they can’t get anything else done.
I know how it works just fine. Human Nature cannot be changed.
