McDonald's reported a surprise fall in sales in the April to June quarter - as customers cut down on trips to the fast food giant.
Americans placed fewer orders than a year ago - meaning sales were down by nearly one per cent. Globally, sales fell by a similar amount.
McDonald's saw fewer customers, but it said those who came spent more because of price increases.
It was the first sales decline since 2020 when the pandemic shuttered stores and millions stayed home. Profits also slumped by 12 percent.
Big price rises - including fan favorites like a Big Mac meal hitting $17.59 - are blamed for customers staying away.
'The biggest hit for McDonald's is the low-income consumer has really cut back on visits and that is more than offsetting the typical trade down [the chain] normally sees in tougher economic times,' said Edward Jones analyst Brian Yarbrough.
McDonald's results dovetail with comments last week from Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey, who said sales were slow in restaurants - an indication of fewer people eating out.
McDonald's also reported lower store traffic in China, France and the Middle East, where people have been boycotting McDonald´s because of a perception that it supports Israel in the war in Gaza.

Mcdonald’s has always been our favorite, mainly because of the coffee. Now I have another reason.
That’s a Bidenomics Bidenburger right there.
You can invite me over for breakfast anytime.
That was $1.15 when I worked at McD's, 50+ years ago when I was a teenager.
Big Mac Combo meal is $8.99 here in central Texas.
The first time I visited that McDonald’s in 1992 I had wait in line nearly an hour, bundled up in the cold.
When people travel I have noticed that they go to places like McDonald’s because they prefer the known mediocre for the unknown quality of a local restaurant.
Years ago I learned when I travel that opting for an unknown local restaurant almost always brings better prices and better food than the known mediocrity of chains.
I don’t understand why people eat there. The food is overly processed garbage, I feel ill after eating it. Now the prices are insane too.
There’s many restaurants serving quality food where a dinner meal is enough for two. My wife and I just place an order on the phone and pick it up 20 minutes later. It’s not any more expensive, healthier, and doesn’t take any longer.
The only exception is if we’re already on the road and figure a quick pit-stop is an immediate need, which is rare.
Was Kenny Rogers Roasters closed?
Too expensive and very unhealthy.
Bidenomics! It’s the gift that keeps on giving!

Not to mention that pork is quite a bit cheaper than beef.
Truth is their sausage is primo, wish we could buy it in super markets.
“I remember when McDonalds had the best shakes and the best fries.”
McDonald’s had always used real potatoes and they had a crew member come in early in the morning early to peal and cut the fire and batch them before they were fried. I don’t know if they still do that.
The shakes on the other hand were governed many times by state laws. Each state has a determination on what can be in a shake and still call it one. In the one I worked in California they had no ice cream or milk and were coming out of shipped in gallons of liquid shake mix. Get an order, pour it, put in the right flavor mix, use the machine, put on lid, get to windows. Basic. But the shakes were not always the same in each state. The fries were for real. Not sure if they still are. Cost effective.

I always take dates to Arby’s. They usually have the Roast Beef
McD has used frozen fries for decades.
My favorite fast food place is Whataburger. The sweet and spicy cheeseburger is just under $8.00; but, it’s two 1/4 pound burger patties, two slices of cheese, 3 slices of bacon, and salsa. It’s their number one seller and takes at least 10 bites. If you are a senior citizen, you get a free fountain drink. Don’t need fries because the burger is more than enough to fill you up.
Only down side us they don’t have wifi.
That price for a Big Mac meal is what one used to pay for a gourmet burger entree at some sit down restaurant if not more pre Biden years. McDonalds fare is mostly meh after one has had a few of their items. It has to be for me pretty much the only choice available these days for me to patronize them and they are almost never the only choice.
If I’m on the road I don’t understand how people have time to “find a local restaurant”. You’re talking at least two hours. Or I can spend less than 10 minutes and eat on the road. It’s a no brainer.
When I was working for them in the 60’s there was one guy who came in at 0500 every day for 6 hours, went downstairs to storage, and brought up a couple of 100 pound burlap sacks of potatoes, ran them through the peeler, blanched them and set them up in trays for single serve dips in the hot grease to serve. On the weekends, someone else did the prep work. They were real. But they were also expensive. And he was the only guy beside the managers that was on a set schedule. They asked me if I wanted to go to hamburger college, but I turned it down as I had other things on my docket for my future other than calling shots. Something other than cheese on twelve.
