The e-commerce leader in Europe is Amazon - but Chinese ventures into international e-commerce, for example AliExpress or more recently Temu, have made inroads.
The following infographic, via Statista's Anna Fleck, looks specifically at the example of the Chinese company Pinduoduo, drawing from ecommmerceDB figures.

According to this data, Pinduoduo will only be 13 percent behind Amazon in terms of gross merchandise volume in 2024. To put this in perspective: in 2019, Amazon's gross merchandise volume was more than twice as large as that of Pinduoduo.
Pinduoduo also owns the online marketplace Temu.
The Temu app went online in the U.S. in autumn 2022, where it went straight to number one in the download charts.
While Temu's global goods volume of around $30 billion is still quite small compared to the $389 billion of amazon.com, sales forecasts are pointing upwards.
Shortly after the release of the shopping app Temu in autumn 2022, Pinduoduo renamed itself PDD Holdings and has since served as the holding company for both platforms.
In 2023, PDD Holdings recorded record sales of $34.9 billion.
Compared to the previous year, this corresponds to sales growth of almost 90 percent, which, according to the company, is due to an increase in revenue from online marketing services and transaction services.
The Chinese e-commerce sites are corrupt. They bait and switch and use deceptive ads. Shipping charges are inflated too. Try to return a defective item. Ha! Won’t happen.
I’ll continue to buy my Chinese junk through Amazon, thank you.
As much as I hate Bezos, I’ll take him over China any day.
Temu was cheaper but their product was insufficient to my needs. I bought an office chair. It was shipped on time and was easy to assemble, but the design was suck. It cut the circulation off to my legs.
I can’t use it. I’m going to an Office Depot or Staples where I can try the chair out before buying it.
IME... Amazon USED to be great..
But with jacking up pricing, inconsistent deliveries and missed dates. Prime membership is NOT what it used to be either.
Temu has been able to sell the exact same item, Cheaper. Ship it from China and get it to the door faster than Amazon.
They also give credits when they miss their delivery window and returns so far have been on par with current Amazon.
Walmart is also upping their game in a huge way. They will quickly be equal to or better than amazon (IMO) very shortly.
It was worth it last night as I was forced to switch from Hannity's Convention coverage to Prime's direct coverage as Hannity wouldn't shut up so I could hear the speeches.
Newsmax/ Greta has been awful as well..
I want to hear the speakers. NOT the talking heads, talking over each other “commenting” on the speech, real time while preventing me from HEARING the actual speech.
Theres a lot more poor quality/fake products on the chinese sites. Amazon and ebay work to keep fakes off their sites for legal reasons.
Amazon has the US infrastructure. Lord willing, Trump will prevent any Chinese company from creating the same.
TEMU sends all your personal data to the CCP.
Good. Bankrupt them.
I hope Alphabet (Google/Youtube), Facebook and Apple meet that same fate.
False. Since you claim to 'know it all', where is TEMU HQ located ?
Temu and Alibaba are basically manufacturer direct to consumer (alibaba is also direct to business). Temu handles logistics and takes a cut. From what I can tell they have their own drivers and don’t use USPS or UPS much. People who were buying from Temu or Alibaba and similar sites - or directly from China - were reselling the items on Amazon at great markup. Some of that markup has to do with Amazon’s fee structure and shipping costs which they pass onto the seller, as well as carrying costs and cost of capital. Though Amazon shipping fees to sellers is greatly discounted vs retail shipping rates, selling on Amazon the various fees add up.
The customers pay for Prime, but that just makes it free to the customer. Amazon also has great logistics. But they still charge the sellers for shipping and storage and inbound fees. The advantage of Prime is same day or 2 day delivery for most items. If you go to Temu etc you generally have to wait up to 2 weeks (though some inventory is kept in the US) to deliver but it costs sometimes 90% less.
Yes they work to keep fakes off. But these sites aren’t selling counterfeits. They are selling generic stuff or house brand stuff.
Temu app is the worst there is, and the product quality is atrocious
Which ones ? Or are you just making a blanket assumption?
They bait and switch and use deceptive ads.
OK. Show me one. Or is this another blanket assumption?
Shipping charges are inflated too.
Exactly how is FREE SHIPPING inflated ??????
Try to return a defective item. Ha! Won’t happen.
Ahhhh... TRUE, but not why you think. What happens is that they tell you to keep the item and they just refund your money because it costs them WAY MORE than the item is worth to have it shipped back.
Have you ever ordered an item from one of these (so called) Chinese companies ? Have you ever had to return an item to same ? I would bet money the answer to both questions is no.
What say you ?
Please never buy from Temu. I know a lady that gets ripped off on that place.
I agree. Nobody should defend the shoddy-ness of Temu. They do not deliver what they picture.
