Last I heard, two really good looking guys were holed up in a building, surrounded by the Bolivian army, wishing they had gone to Australia to continue their bank robbing careers.

The Bolivians like the independence allying with Russia and BRICS gives them. The DC Gringos don’t like being shown up. “Aggressive Neutrality” will not be tolerated. Oh, Bolivia also has the largest known lithium deposits on earth.

It looks like it was all a performance.

17 people arrested in attempted coup that shook Bolivia, government says

Buried deep in the articlce:
Before his arrest late Wednesday, Zúñiga alleged without providing evidence that Arce had ordered the general to carry out the coup attempt in a ruse to boost the president’s popularity. That fueled a frenzy of speculation about what really happened, and opposition senators and government critics echoed the accusations, calling the mutiny a “self-coup” — a claim strongly denied by Arce’s government.

Whenever the AP includes the phrase, "without providing evidence", you can almost be assured it's true, and it's embarrassing to the AP's preferred narrative.

I was there is the mid 1990s as a US Border Patrol Agent working with DEA on Operation Snow Cap.

The country is a mess, the problem is all the smart, rich and educated Spaniards live in the big cities. As such they tend to be conservatives. Out in the countryside resides the poor, uneducated Indian peasants who are socialist. There is nothing resembling the US middle class.

Since its a democracy the Indian peasants socialist have all the power but can't run anything effectively as you would expect.

When I was there, their military was a joke, I guess back in the 1970s they attempted a takeover. They were put down by the national police and largely defunded.

I'm not sure what the current dustup is about, best bet somebodies drug payoffs are being affected and they're not happy about it.

Not to worry, its seems the cartels have negotiated a settlement with both of their government partners and all is well.
