Today I watched the D-Day ceremonies on Canadian TV. It's not that I'm a fan of CBC, but it was difficult to find a US broadcast that was not delayed, edited and polished by liberal sycophants. And to be even more honest, I could not stomach hearing Joe Biden making a "heartfelt" speech on such sacred ground before he pooped his pants.
The Canadian ceremony included Justine Turd-oh, Prince William and the PM of France, Gabriel Attal. All went pretty well. When the ceremony was over. the 3 dignitaries started to shake hands with each of the 13 Normandy vets present.
It became clear almost from the first vet that they wanted to only shake hands and speak with William. To his credit, he took lots of time with each vet. To me, it appeared he was enjoying this. No "thank you for your service" handshake and move on as Trudeau and Attal seemed to show.
Stories of their time in England before the invasion were coming out. These were genuine conversations.
One gentleman, in fact, drew a huge laugh from William. It seems a bunch of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles were on their way to meet then Princess Elizabeth. At a stop light, this man and some of his buddies hopped out and went to a pub!! He said he was so glad, at last to meet a member of the royal family!
The Royals get lots of some times deserved criticism. But the warmth and dignity William paid the Canadian vets was, to me, wonderful. Will's granny would be proud, indeed.
Great post thanks!
Too bad that vet did not get to meet Elizabeth before her passing. She was a real person, not just a royal. She would have enjoyed the story about the Royal Winnipeg men as much or more than William did.
I like William and Kate. The only reason the Monarchy hasn’t been dissolved after Liz 2 is them. Diana saved the Monarcy through William.
And the Queen was a WW II veteran.
A genuine prince among men.
William is a class act.
He looked genuinely glad to be there.
Thank you for this uplifting post.
Very nice. Thanks for posting. I like William.
I mixed up William with Harry. Scratch that.
I guess it helps to get the extra sausage and the bigger bedroom.. Too bad, Prince Harry. You can go buy food at Trader Joes now.
I sense both William and Kate developed the strong sense of duty and responsibility from QE II
Great post! William & Kate are going to be amazing for the monarchy! I must say, I miss Queen Elizabeth 2 very much in these troubled times. She was an amazing source of stability & continuity. The day she died, I remember coming to the realization that she had been on the throne my entire life- even 4 decades before I was born.
I excelled in geneological research. So most Americans are white & about 3/4 of white heritage in the US is English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish & Irish Republican. We have all the same historical ties as Canada, Australia & New Zealand (English Common Law, language, political philosophies, etc.). I know its trendy in modern times to discount the role of a traditional institution like Monarchy, but I have a great deal of respect for it.
Were I given an option between Biden & QE2, I’d have chosen her every day of the week & twice on Sunday 🩵😉
A few years later, she was his boss.
I started going through posts. There’s such affection for Prince William here. I’ve read such nasty posts about Prince Harry, I thought every FReeper hated the Royals. Now I know they just don’t like Harry. Princess Di got me into the Royal family.
And they had a good relationship.
She went to see him just before he died and he fell asleep in his bed. She bent over and kissed his forehead and said, “God bless you” and left.
