As a vocal advocate of vaccinations for public health, Peter Hotez was no stranger to online harassment and threats. But then the abuse showed up on his doorstep.
It was a Sunday during a brutal Texas heatwave in June 2023 when a man turned up at Hotez’s home, filming himself as he shouted questions at the scientist, who is a paediatrician and virologist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
Because of the long-running online and real-life abuse he has faced, Hotez now has the Texas Medical Center Police, Houston Police Department and Harris County Sheriff’s Office on speed dial, an agent tasked to him from the FBI and extra security whenever he speaks publicly.
“This is a very powerful adversarial force that is seeking to undermine science, and now it’s not only going after the science. It’s going after the scientists,” he says.
…
Such threats to scientists aren’t new; those researching climate change and gun control, for example, have endured abuse for decades. However, since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an unprecedented escalation in the intensity and frequency of attacks, and the range of targets, say researchers. Anthony Fauci, the former director of the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and one of the most high-profile infectious-diseases specialists during the pandemic, was subject not just to online trolling, but to two credible attempts on his life that prompted the arrests of two people. …
This issue has led to a court case in New Zealand, in which microbiologist Siouxsie Wiles is suing her employer, the University of Auckland, over the way it has responded to the ongoing harassment she has experienced since early 2020, which included online attacks and people confronting her in public.

And here is Hotez, who helped author a paper “ Effectiveness of vaccination mandates in improving uptake of COVID-19 vaccines in the USA.”
well stop lying to us about man-made global warming and covid vaccines and we will stop harassing you!
How to help? Quit the bullcrap, quit the totalitarian mentality, and get your mouth off of the DC money nipple.
Basically quit being whores.
What a ham. The bowtie, the microscope. What a clown.
And what is this “science” where nobody is allowed to challenge or ask tough questions?
It’s interesting that they don’t mention the harassment of scientists Dr. Kulldorff, Dr. Bhattacharya and Dr. Gupta after they jointly produced the Great Barrington Declaration that spoke to the harm of lockdowns, school and business closures, etc.
That harassment was AT THE HANDS OF THEIR PEERS like that jackass Hotez — and Fauci and Collins themselves!
But it only counts if its pro-vaxxers being taken to task.
May “Nature” and “Science” and “Lancet” and every other woke “science” “journal” totally crash and burn and go out of print. Society and real science will benefit greatly from their failure.
Fauci and others have abused scientists who said lockdowns don’t work, the vaccines wouldn’t work etc. Back in the 80’s Fauci destroyed scientists who didn’t agree with him on AIDS.
You won’t read about that in this article.
Also, Fauci is not a scientist. You could get the impression that he is one from this Orwellian article.
It never was.
And it sure isn't now.
The history of science is littered with "no wait....that's wrong...THIS is right..." going through the rinse and repeat cycle endlessly.
And that's ok. Inquiry and challenge and "being a science heretic" is, in many ways, how mankind learns more and can fix more problems.
One of my favorite sagas regarding "accuracy" and "settled science" is ulcers.
In 1981 Barry Marshall began working with Robin Warren, the Royal Perth Hospital pathologist who, two years earlier, discovered the gut could be overrun by hardy, corkscrew-shaped bacteria called Helicobacter pylori. Biopsying ulcer patients and culturing the organisms in the lab, Marshall traced not just ulcers but also stomach cancer to this gut infection. The cure, he realized, was readily available: antibiotics. But mainstream gastroenterologists were dismissive, holding on to the old idea that ulcers were caused by stress.
Unable to make his case in studies with lab mice (because H. pylori affects only primates) and prohibited from experimenting on people, Marshall... ran an experiment on ...himself. He took some H. pylori from the gut of an ailing patient, stirred it into a broth, and drank it....Back in the lab, he biopsied his own gut, culturing H. pylori and proving unequivocally that bacteria were the underlying cause of ulcers.
For their work on H. pylori, Marshall and Warren shared a 2005 Nobel Prize. Today the standard of care for an ulcer is treatment with an antibiotic.
But science isn't math. Your checking account balance is the sum of deposits less sum of withdrawals. Always. Forever.
The problem arises when people try to equate science with math...usually they call it "settled science." And, to be sure, robust inquiry and disciplined application of the scientific method usually gives you clear and distinct results. Then, science is settled...until we get new data or better techniques, and then we get "wait a minute..".
For example, there was a most excellent article posted on how "settled science" wasn't so settled, wherein:
seems that Earth has been misplaced. According to a new map of the Milky Way galaxy, the Solar System's position isn't where we thought it was. Not only is it closer to the galactic centre - and the supermassive hole therein, Sagittarius A* - it's orbiting at a faster clip.
It further noted other "errors" in SCIENCE:
A good recent example of this is the red giant star Betelgeuse, which turned out to be closer to Earth than previous measurements suggested. This means that it's neither as large nor as bright as we thought. Another is the object CK Vulpeculae, a star that exploded 350 years ago. It's actually much farther away, which means that the explosion was brighter and more energetic, and requires a new explanation, since previous analyses were performed under the assumption it was relatively low energy
The BIG problem arises when Certain Powers work overtime to suppress assiduous inquiry. Which, is what we had in 2020-2022.
In the interest of full disclosure, my "science isn't math" quote came from a post on social sciences, that featured this brilliant give and take involving a Harvard faculty member critical of Charles Murray from the original article, that is worth reprinting - it is with regard to the "certainty of SCIENCE":
"so why should we let someone teach social science that we know to be wrong in our social science courses?"
Because it is possible that you are wrong.
Science is not mathematics. Newtonian physics was wrong. And social science is a further three rungs down in certainty from science.
Your level of certainty and arrogance about what can be said, and probably thought, smacks of religion, and not science. This is a political religion that permeates academia at the moment. And which I am fairly sure you will swear does not infect you, while the rest of us can see the symptoms quite plainly.
Only religions ban heretics from speaking because of the wrong-think they might cause. Real science loves a good heretic. In fact, honestly, the entire goal of science is to be a heretic. To have an idea that no other person ever had. Science is the pretty much the antithesis of your thought-police approach.
And most of academia used to be the antithesis of your thought police approach as well, until the religion of leftism took it over, with the direct help of people like you.
I am glad these “scientists” are getting some of what they deserve.
Indeed, Hotez and his ilk should be grateful that "harassment" and "threats" are all to which they've been subjected. What they deserve is far worse.
Hotez is a quack
These left-wing postmodernists reject math also, along with truth and objective reality, as merely constructs of white colonialism.
It’s all part of their goal of bringing down Western civilization.
DILLIGAS?
You do realize that scientists in medical fields have little, if nothing, to do with the climate alarmists, don't you? And that those who are trying to scare the daylights out of you about taking a covid vaccine have been trying to get people to refuse vaccines for over 200 years now? What antivaxxers want is for infectious disease to once again be a major killer, like it has been through most of human history. They fearmonger about vaccines because they want more people to die.
If scientists stopped being political and stuck to just, science, there wouldn’t be a problem.
I am not anti vax, I am against Covid hysteria!
Fauchi admits now that the whole 6 foot thing was bs
Exactly. For smart people they sure are idiots.
