This has been known for at least 30 years.
The change this century has been a calorie change. People in the 20s and thirties ate much less than they so today. Parenting philosophy was about strict standardized mealtimes. Less calorie and vitamin intake led to smaller people.most of us are much larger than out great grands.
Menarch is precipitated by weight and fat content of the female. Rule of thumb has been approximately 103 pounds. I suspect it is less recently. Signs of puberty such as breast swelling and pubic and axillary hair is beginning as early as ages 6 or 7 and the threshold for precocious puberty had dropped to ages 4 or 5.
There may be things about this we don’t understand and don’t know causes of.
For example, I recall hearing years ago, that groups of college girls living in dorms were cycling together. The report at that time was that it was a mystery why that happened.
Severe is an incorrect term. Occur more often would be correct .

Hormones in your food to make animals mature more quickly and gain weight faster could never be the culprit.
Chickens are ready for slaughter in 5.5 - 6 weeks after hatching. People eat that and wonder why they get early and irregular periods.
Fats are the precursors of hormones.

I suspect the the insane number of vaccines now given to children could come into play into addition to that to a lessor degree.

True, we are supposed to talk of pregnant people and menstruating persons, and not give any indication that those who menstruate or get pregnant must be female.

It is nutrition. Kids on modern high protein diets are taller and mature earlier than in medieval days or even 100 years ago.
