We’re lucky that a “Hitler” didn’t arise in this generation.

Interesting coincidence that the two most decisive battles in WWII occurred in early June ... Operation Overlord launched on 06JUN1944, and the defense of Midway concluded on 06JUN1942.

....there was also this: code named “Operation Neptune” which most folks are not even aware of.....

“The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it is the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of France, and the rest of Western Europe, and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front.”

Greatest upstaging in military history. Mark Clark expected a huge morale boost (and quite a few headlines) by taking Rome, the first Axis capital to fall. Which he did. On 4 June.

In 1944 the Russians were ascendent, the U-Boat threat was minimal, and the Japs were in retreat.

Tomorrow is the 82nd anniversary of the Battle of Midway, when the allies were in a perilous situation.

In early 1942, the allies were on their heels. The Japs had swept the allies from the western Pacific and the Indian Ocean. The Nazis were deep in Russia and Rommel was kicking butt in north Africa.

I have friends that are jumping as part of the commemoration this week.

I’ll be in Holland later this year for Operation Market Garden 80.

Today, the 4th of June, Adm Dan Gallery forced a German submarine to the surface and captured it, the U-505, Enigma and all, off the coast of Africa. He was thrilled and proud, and was going to tow it into the nearest port, Casablanca.

One day before the scheduled invasion of Europe, and SHAEF was not happy.

I collect tons of military books about weapons and wars. The best one i have is an equipment of D-Day volume and very fully illustrated. Unfortunately it is all in German and I’ve never found its US published counter part. It really is an amazing collection.
