1. Select a VP well before the election.
2. If Trump goes to jail immediately make the VP the presidential candidate. Make Trump the VP candidate.
3. After the acquittal trade places between Trump and the VP.
4. If the Republican presidential candidate (the VP) wins, if needed pardon Trump and then trade places with the VP. There is no known law against it.

State conviction. No power to pardon state offenses.

Other than the 12th Amendment:

"they shall name in their ballots the person voted for as President, and in distinct ballots the person voted for as Vice-President"
