Due to the size and width of wedge tornadoes, they are thought of as the largest and most menacing tornado type. It is so broad that at first glance it's not recognized as being a tornado. The base, or part of the storm that touches the ground, of a wedge tornado can be a mile or more wide, and often looks like low-hanging dark clouds to passersby. These "fat" storms often bear the lion's share of blame among tornado survivors, because they seem to strike without warning.
As if they weren't already difficult to see, wedges can also be "rain-wrapped." When this occurs, curtains of nearby rainfall encircle the tornado funnel, veiling the twister and further lowering its visibility.

Wow. Never seen one like that before.
Good lord……..frightening .

The two Moore, Oklahoma tornadoes (1999, 2013) immediately come to mind.
And if a hurricane hits Pensacola on Election Day? We’re talking Redneck Riveria.
Reports it stayed on the ground for an hour
81 tornadoes so far in this outbreak....some Watches have 5 more hours to go. Looks like a biggie is underway. Prayers for all...
My mother-in-law’s care center in Elkhorn was apparently spared when the tornado hopped over it. My sister’s son-in-law’s friend sent a photo taken apparently just across the street and everything was decimated there. I frantically tried to find out if she was OK until her son returned my call and said the care center had emailed to say the residents were all OK.
I can’t tell you how tearfully I was thanking God. I go there every week to see her. Was just there on Wednesday.
Prayers up for everybody who may not have been so fortunate.

81 reports .. some of those are multiple reports of the same tornado
Go to “filtered” reports on SPC .. it factors out reports within so many miles of each other near the same time
Very good comment to inform people how these massive tornadoes can fool people. It’s hypothesized that this is how the Tri-State outbreak in 1925 killed so many.
Thomas Grazulis in “Significant Tornadoes” said the “normally weather-wise farmers knew their storms” but this was only a darkening on the horizon. Moving at 70 mph snuck up on them fast.
Horrible.
