The House GOP Is About to Jam Senate Dems on the TikTok Bill
The Daily Beast ^ | Apr. 19, 2024 | Riley Rogerson and Reese Gorman

To the chagrin of middle-schoolers everywhere, the most extreme restrictions on TikTok are on a glide path to passage in Congress.

The bill—which is now set to get a vote on Saturday and is expected to pass with strong bipartisan support—has animated distraught TikTok creators of all ages to call congressional offices and demand they oppose a ban on the popular video app.

While the legislation is largely understood and referred to as a bill to ban TikTok, the truth is far more complex. The measure would not immediately ban TikTok. Rather, it would force its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app to a U.S.-based entity within nine months of becoming law, giving the president the option of stalling the elimination of TikTok for another 90 days.

The House passed effectively the same measure about five weeks ago—the biggest change is the timeline for a sale, from six months to now nine months (and potentially a year)—but it’s languished in the Senate ever since. With no movement, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) folded the legislation into a quartet of foreign aid bills. By linking the bill to much-needed foreign aid—most specifically, highly controversial Ukraine aid—Johnson’s maneuver is designed to force the Senate to approve the bill.

Ohs BS. So in a year TikTok has to be sold, and meanwhile Biden gets his Ukraine bill and I am supposed to understand that that master of the house used the power of his position to shove the Tic Toc ban down the throats of a reluctant Senators. My Man! Way to go! Wait, what, what about my country, my border, my wallet, my freedom? Still, he’s the man.

Slippery snake...

This is NOT just about TikTok. It opens the door to do this to any and all public forums. I read it and even the FR is on the chopping block if this passes.

In my opinion, TikTok should not be banned in the USA, even though such a ban may benefit the 𝕏 platform.

Doing so would be contrary to freedom of speech and expression. It is not what America stands for.— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) April 19, 2024

I read the bill. It includes ANY and all sites or apps where someone can make a public comment or reply. forums, blogs, even some ecommerce features where a customer can make a comment on a product are at risk. Even host server services that host sites they don’t like are at risk.

This is a “blanket” law being disguised as a “TikTok only” bill. IT IS NOT, it is universal across the net. This is one of the most dangerous government take overs of the internet ever. It will destroy it as an open public forum. And it will be policed selectively of course.

The Republicans are worse than the Democrats. At least the Democrats are honest. They are openly Communist and they will say it to your face.

Here is the kicker Elon... It also includes X if they want. So it may not benefit X in the end anyhow.

“ has animated distraught TikTok creators of all ages to call congressional offices and demand they oppose a ban on the popular video app.”

So now the dems that are in tik tok will find out what we’ve learned about contacting our congressman. They do not listen to their constituents. They don’t care about us at all. They’ll send that nice generic response and into the rubbish bin.

Just a thought but did this just pass with the Ukraine bill?

The email system won’t get it to them for 6 months. By then it is too late anyhow.

That was about the only thing Twitter was good for. You could put them on the spot in public in real time. It really does make a difference. They really do not like it when several hundred ask the same thing in half an hour putting them on the spot for a reply.

That's how they were able to pass it. Supporting Ukraine is bipartisan. I'm for Ukraine. But that's not the point here. The government wants to eliminate free speech. And they are able to distract us by doing this.

It won’t take long. But on the bright side, we can all hang out on Facebook, I guess.

“we can all hang out on Facebook, I guess.”

Then they will shut that down too. lol

About time to go off grid and off the normal net.

Time for local desktop client apps and encrypted peer to peer networks like “Gemini”. I have played with it and it is actually pretty cool. It reminds me of the old days of usenet where everything was simple and basic.

“Lagrange” client that also includes the Geninispace network.
