On Sunday evening, July 30, at around 8:00, I was in a supermarket near Roosevelt and Canal in Chicago’s South Loop, an upscale shopping, health club and movie hub on the edge of downtown. The area has been regarded as safe and on the upswing since the late 1990s and is even being considered for a new White Sox park or Bears stadium.
While entering the store I noticed scores of African American teenagers lining the street. At first, I thought that there was some kind of festival or parade. But there was already a city policeman guarding the entrance. I asked him what was going on. He replied that something called a “teen takeover” was beginning, and that the Chicago Police Department had been monitoring it but that they were so far outnumbered.
After my purchase I drove out from the parking garage, only to see a mob approaching. I changed direction immediately, away from the crowd, and proceeded several blocks to the opposite end of downtown until I could exit onto a roundabout route home.
I had heard of previous flash mob events in Chicago and elsewhere during which teenagers had been playing chicken with the police or pursuing dangerous encounters such as fighting, throwing things, jumping on cars, and looting.
On my drive home I switched on Chicago’s twenty-four hour radio news station, WBBM, and not a word was said about the growing crowd, even though WBBM is known for its traffic reports and for announcing “police incidents” that may affect drivers. Here was a clear obstruction -- and possible danger -- to drivers in real time, and there was no radio warning to them!
After the much longer trip home due to the unexpected detour, I called WBBM and its affiliated CBS2 Chicago

Earlier I had posted a story about how the criminal gangs in Haiti are destroying the nation and how they will soon violently overthrow the government.
Unfortunately, Chicago is heading in this direction. Law abiding citizens would de best to get out while they can and move to a red state where laws are still mostly followed and citizens are allowed to be armed for self0-defense.

About 25 years ago, I went on a business trip to the harbor area in Baltimore. I stayed at a large hotel in that area, and going to the conference center was a breeze, using the “Skywalk” that let you walk all the way without having to cross any streets and wait for walk lights.
I really liked the Skywalk that went from our hotel to the Conference Center. In the morning, it was bustling with people, the shops were open, and it was a grand time, no crosswalks to deal with. I thought it was great. I usually left a bit early, as was the practice of many, so walking to and from was safe and very nice.
But one day, I stayed until the very end, and when I went back to the hotel using the Skywalk, it was nearly deserted. There were no people around. All the bustling stores and shops that I had passed during prior walks were dark, and had iron bars across their windows and doors.
I hadn’t noticed at first, but when I realized it, I felt extremely unsafe.
There was NOBODY around. I got the distinct feeling that everyone was privy to some rule that I, a stupid, out-of-state tourist, was totally unaware of.
I opened a door to walk out on a section of bridge that made the crossing high above the street, and there were three teenagers loitering right in the middle of the walk to the other side. When I opened the door, they all stopped in mid-action and looked over at me. They were positioned in such a way as to block the walkway, which put me in the position of squeezing between them if they didn’t move, or asking them to move.
I looked at them, all alone with me on this Skywalk, and looked down at the street crowded with pedestrians, and had the vision of me plummeting to the earth sans wallet and valuables.
I turned around, went back inside and down the stairs to get out on the street with all the people who knew from experience not to use the walkway after 5 PM. I didn’t know that, but the first time I went out there, it was pretty clear to me now.
Never been back down there since then, but I suspect walking out there on that Skywalk or even down on the street as I had would be a sign of insanity today.
Sad. A city just as lost as Chicago.
Read the Riot Act out loud. That was how such things used to be handled.

Either he is stupid or recklessly brave. Why would he go back downtown at night after the first experience? Eventually, one of these mobs will kill a bystander.
If these were white kids with MAGA hats, there’d be 24 hr coverage warning how threatening these crowds were, even without any crimes happening.
“Teens”. Gosh, did they have anything else in common that would help describe them?
The news won’t report it because it is blacks. If blacks are doing something, the news just won’t report it. Period. Blacks have become untouchable. We are no longer a nation of laws. We are a nation of who is it? One law for one person, another law for another person. Disgusting.
Blacks aren’t untouchable.
They’re victimized by other blacks.
Law-abiding blacks are under threat as much as law-abiding people of every skin color.
If you’re a victim of crime, WTH difference does the skin color of the perp make?!
Talking about Baltimore, we lived there in the late 80s. There were places even then that the police wouldn’t go without an armored vehicle.
There was a pretty famous restaurant, called Haussner’s, it had been there since the 20s. On Eastern Ave I think. By the time we left there in the early 90s, I wouldn’t go there if we couldn’t be gone before dark. It closed a few years later. Sad.
The coming turf wars between the Mexican Cartels and The established black gangs should be pretty bloody as both sides play for keeps and fight all out.
