Dakota Johnson and Justin Timberlake had a successful evening on Saturday Night Live this weekend, with surprise appearances from Jimmy Fallon, as well as Shark Tank judges Mark Cuban and Barbara Corcoran. But many viewers were surprised – and somewhat confused – to see Dave Chappelle standing onstage during their goodbyes.
The comedian appeared to join the cast on stage for no reason at all. To the far left of the stage, SNL cast member Bowen Yang, who has become an audience favorite since joining in 2018, can be seen standing far from the cast, unsmiling.
In a video from that evening, Yang’s castmate Sarah Sherman can be seen engaging in a brief conversation with him at the side of the stage. After Yang says something, she then appears to crane her neck to catch a glimpse of Chappelle, who is standing on the far other side of the stage. The clip then shows her saying something to Yang while comfortingly rubbing his arm.
The clip circulated on X, where some SNL fans praised Yang’s reaction to sharing a stage with Chappelle.
“Bowen Yang is so real for this,” one user tweeted.
“This moment of Bowen and Sarah realizing that Chappelle has randomly gotten on stage for the goodnights is really just a bummer to watch,” another wrote.
“The future of SNL is bright with these two. Glad to see them not hiding their feelings about this,” a viewer wrote, referring to Yang and Sherman.
The comedian has been accused of being transphobic and homophobic in his recent comedy specials. GLAAD condemned his 2021 Netflix special The Closer, which showed Chappelle loudly declaring that he’s “Team TERF!” meaning a trans-exclusionary radical feminist.
Chappelle did not appear in any sketches that evening.
He last hosted Saturday Night Live in 2022, during which reports claimed some of the staff writers boycotted the show.
Don’t like his trans jokes?
Why? Chappelle is funny. Oh wait, it’s his transphobic jokes you don’t like.
Who the heck cares?
They are such crybabies.
FFS, they are sickeningly weak and an outright embarrassment to humanity.
Don’t watch SNL, so who is Bowen Yang? Is it transgender?
No, I think he’s just gay.
Someone’s feeewings were hurt, so acting like a mature adult went out the window.
These people are mentally deranged and they control the propaganda aimed at children and young adults
I don’t watch SNL anymore so I had never heard of Bowen Yang until now. Apparently, he’s an Asian homosexual who is a cast member of the show. He’s perceived to have shunned Chappelle out of some sort of LGBT solidarity.
My guess is that Bowen Yang just hates black people. He probably doesn’t support progressive goals of diversity and inclusiveness, which is why he can’t tolerate Dave Chappelle.
I’d run into Chapelle on YouTube and found him to be top notch humor. Then I learned something about him and have refused to give any clicks to him ever again. He is Muslim.
Yang wouldn’t want to stand too close to Chappelle. He might contract a sense of humor and come down with an unprecedented case of funniness that could cost him his job at SNL.
SNL cast members don’t like anyone who is funny.
If he’s muslim, then it’s a very loose definition of Islam that he’s using to define himself.

Am curious why he was on the stage in the first place. They have to pay him.
Don’t believe me. Look it up for yourself. He was exposed to it at age 17 in his neighborhood.
I’ve heard him refer to himself as a devout Muslim in the past tense.
Maybe I’m not as up to date as you but he did speak out as pro-Palestinian, pro-hamas, anti-Israel recently, on stage during a performance. People got up and walked out.
I like Chappelle and I haven’t really watched SNL in over 20 years, but why is he randomly coming up on the stage when he wasn’t a guest on the show? Seems weird…
