Southern Wisconsin fire station to install "baby basket"

EDGERTON, Wis. - Last week, Gov. Tony Evers signed a bill that would expand the Safe Haven Law, allowing parents to anonymously and safely surrender their newborns to hospitals, fire stations, police stations.

The update came months after southern Wisconsin was shaken by the news of an abandoned newborn child found dead in a cornfield just outside of Whitewater.

"They (residents) felt like this baby's life really mattered and they wanted to do something to make sure that if somebody else found themselves in this situation that they had an option," Rep. Ellen Schutt (R-Clinton) said.

Now that the bill is signed, the Edgerton Fire District plans to install a safe haven baby box, a 24-hour place where a baby can be safely surrendered.

"A former member of our staff literally was at birth abandoned by their parent. When we talk about it and when that individual would talk about it, it's from the heart. It's very personal," says Randall Pickering, Edgerton Fire District Chief.

This fire district is still ironing out plans on where exactly the box will be installed.

Safe Haven for Newborns Information

I don’t give my governor (D) credit for much, but I WILL give him credit for this.

Obviously more age discrimination at play here. How about a cage for troubled teenagers? Or a locker for grandma off her rocker? More lawsuits coming.

Nice move.

Maybe there’s a way to donate baby food, clothes and toys to the Safe Havens?

Now you’re talking. The ones that don’t shut up. Obviously they played with a Chatty Cathy doll and with that kind of upbringing what does society expect?

I lived in Edgerton for a year. Charming town of 5,000 built on tobacco production.

thats a great idea. you could probably just buy stuff and donate it to Social Servics- they know who is in need.
Or a maternity ward to send home with a low income mom.

All very worthy to be sure......I was thinking Safe Havens are
probably not well-stocked in the beginning and could use donations.

Fire stations have been safe havens for abandoned babies for decades yet these guys are still ironing things out.

They have a Wish List set up at Amazon, but to me that looks like mainly things to support their Admin.

https://www.amazon.com/registries/gl/guest-view/23D6H3RBZU9BZ

If you want to donate directly, you can send money specifically towards a Medical Kit Bag at the location where the Baby Box is located, or you can donate towards a Medical Bassinet and Bed for the baby.

https://www.shbb.org/donate

(Scroll down...)

Something else worthwhile to donate to (IMHO) are the programs that give expectant mothers ultrasounds so they can see their babies in utero, which a lot of times prevents abortion.

I’m not promoting this organization over any others; just an example of what is out there.

And then, once born, they can take their unwanted kid to a Baby Box instead! Win/Win! :)

Obviously no DemonRATs there.
