“And primarily reduce wingtip vortices”
Efficiency notwithstanding, I miss wingtip vortices. They’re quite cool, from the ground at least. My wife and I used to walk in a park over which planes landed and the vortices not only looked really cool, we’d get this “whoosh whoosh” coming down at us that was fantastic.
I miss that.
Ugh.
Been a long time since I got out of the airplane business, but all you've got to do is mention "vortices" or any airflow that ain't nice and smooooooooooth and I get tense.
Too much time after tests were completed chasing anomalous load data and looking under things for bent/busted parts will do that, I guess.
I'll just make that nightcap a double tonight and charge it off to you if you don't mind. (/jk)
They are best experienced when you are in a light AC or helo, and you go below the flight path of a heavy. I don't miss that. They are why you land forward of where a heavier aircraft in front of you landed.
