I've studied nuclear war for 35 years -- you should be worried. | Brian Toon | TEDxMileHigh
TEDx Talks ^ | 2/1/18 | TEDx Talks

Posted on 10/29/2023 1:20:08 PM PDT by know.your.why

For the first time in decades, it's hard to ignore the threat of nuclear war. But as long as you're far from the blast, you're safe, right? Wrong. In this sobering talk, atmospheric scientist Brian Toon explains how even a small nuclear war could destroy all life on earth -- and what we can do to prevent it. A professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Brian Toon investigates the causes of the ozone hole, how volcanic eruptions alter the climate, how ancient Mars had flowing rivers, and the environmental impacts of nuclear war. He contributed to the U.N.’s Nobel Peace Prize for climate change and holds numerous scientific awards, including two NASA medals for Exceptional Scientific Achievement. He is an avid woodworker. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

“how even a small nuclear war could destroy all life on earth”

That is nonsense, so I won’t bother watching it.

There is not going to be a nuclear war but they’re going to make you think we’re on the brink before its over. This is all part of the gin up.

I studied nuclear war for 10 minutes and came to a conclusion that it isn’t good. Like really really not good.

More powerful bombs today and many more than 2 would be set off causing a nuclear winter because of debris in the atmosphere. Crops wont grow and temps will be much colder.

All warnings about nuclear war are worth noting. It’s damn serious business, obviously. But I’d like to know how atmospheric scientist Brian Toon feels about “Climate Change”. If he recognizes it for the fraud it is, then I will give his words weight.

But if he’s on the Climate Change bandwagon, then perhaps he gets hysterical about other things as well.

Yet nearly 4 decades after Chernobyl the surrounding forests STILL have a carpet of organic matter on the forest floor which will not decompose due to the absence of microbial life.

I suggest laying off the radiation Kool-Aid served by the propaganda specialists since the 1940s in DC.

Beat me to it. And there was a lot of atmospheric testing long after WWII. I don’t think at any point people said “We’ve messing with the weather! Look at what we’ve done to the climate!” No. There was awareness of fallout. So atmospheric testing gave way to underground testing. And then simulated testing. Just made more sense, because radiation is bad.

But I don’t see how any sort of limited exchange would hurt the earth. Sure — it might screw up supply chains, cause casualties, disrupt several societies. It would be bad. But I don’t see the climate being a primary casualty.

Climate change will end it all within a few years so what difference does it make.

So if we have a nuclear winter can we go back to driving SUVs?

“There is not going to be a nuclear war”

How can you speak for Iran, North Korea, Pakistan and others? Do they come to you for the go-ahead before doing anything?

Best place to survive an all out nuclear war is somewhere in the southern hemisphere.

Are you purposely being an idiot? Those weapons were 5X smaller than todays tactical nuke and 40X smaller than todays strategic nuke.
