And they want to reintroduce grizzlies into Washington state.

Does “bear protocol” call for carrying a handgun?

Someone explain to me how a bear can kill 2 people and a dog, how did at least one of them not run away?
To: Billthedrill
The guy in Montana (who lived despite his jaw being ripped off) was armed. The bear came out of nowhere fast. He didn’t have much time.

They needed a bigger dog. Grand Pyrenees, maybe.
Or a large caliber firearm.

Big bore revolvers. Minimum 44 magnum and preferably 454 Casul.

Dog probably fought the bear and the couple curled up and bear knocked them around?
Bear are faster than people think. They don’t give warnings, especially males.

"“They lived for being in the backcountry and were two of the most cautious people I know. They knew bear protocol and followed it to a tee,”"
Not really. "Bear protocol" is at least a .357mag, with 230gr FMJs.

Sure, but with two people, if they had a fire arm you would think one of them would have been able to survive.

Yup, some Alaskan guides carry double-barrels because “you only ever get two shots anyway.” I carry what the park rangers carry. Sometimes, though, you’re lunch.

Husband: Let’s go hiking in the Nat’l Park, honey.
Wife: So why are you putting on your running shoes?
Husband: That’s in case we run into a bear.
Wife: I don’t understand...
Husband: All I have to do is out-run you, dear!
