A restaurant fired back at New York Times columnist David Brooks after he complained Wednesday on social media about the cost of his meal, saying, "This is why Americans think the economy is terrible."
"This meal just cost me $78 at Newark Airport. This is why Americans think the economy is terrible," Brooks wrote with a picture of his dinner, which consisted of a cheeseburger, fries and what appears to be an alcoholic beverage.
However, the restaurant 1911 Smoke House Barbeque pushed back on Brooks' post on Facebook Thursday.
"Looks like someone was knocking back some serious drinks - Bar tab was almost 80% and he's complaining about the cost of his meal," it wrote. "Keep drinking buddy - we get paid off everything."
Brook's post went viral on X, formerly known as Twitter, receiving more than 20 million views in under 24 hours. Many who commented on the post mocked the New York Times columnist.
Co-host of "Breaking Points" Saagar Enjeti said, "Brooks inadvertently proving an important point. If you stop drinking alcohol you can save yourself a lot money!"
Conservative author Carmine Sabia asked, "Alexa, what is an elitist?"
"You voted for Biden. Chow down," conservative actor Nick Searcy wrote.
Author Joyce Carol Oates also mocked Brooks, posting, "(bar bill: $66. food bill: $12. tip: $0 N Y Times expense account)."

I’ll say this....if you are a cocktail person, you are probably worse off than the beer guy....so far on inflation.
Proving David Brooks IS one of the bad guys . . . right David?
Just like you wrote yourself
cheeseburger, fries for $12 doesn’t seem all that unreasonable these days
I mean especially at an airport
Brooks. Gets. Owned.
I hear Bud light is damn near free.. it’s also damn near water, but...
He should drink that with his meal.
A$$hole elitist. If a cheeseburger and fries were $78 theyโd be out of business. Simple math says he had a minimum of 6 beers. Big ones
Drunk, stupid and leftist is no way to go through life, Brooks.
Presumably because cocktail drinkers have already shown themselves to be less price sensitive.
It seems unreasonable to me when you examine the cause of it, which was/is totally unnecessary.
Hey limousine socialist media, you voted for it!
Really.
That’s what it is out here in flyover country.
Still I’m not surprised because airports are always high for a captive audience.
When I traveled weekly I usually made certain to eat before or after when possible.
Two Jurassic Park burgers at Hardee’s cost me about $20-$22 bucks even last year.
I even would have gotten them again but the promotion was over.
I can get two good burgers at Whataburger for about $16-$17.
McDonald’s has a great coupon on nearly every receipt and that’s what I get when I can.
Actually a pretty great deal but a lot of people obviously don’t like McDonald’s.
It’s good enough for me. ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐คช๐คช๐คช

Joe Brandon Biden still sucks for destroying the economy.
Yep I’m here in the Midwest.
I just listed what I pay.
I’m choosing Popeyes over Chick-fil-A because Chick-fil-A is too high and their CEO went all political woke.

CEOs aside, the Chick-fil-A restaurants in my area actually have comparable, if not better prices on meals than the Popeye’s. I love Popeye’s, especially their tenders with blackened ranch, but the downside of them is every location I’ve been to in the metro Detroit area is either filthy, poorly run, or both. Also, the one decent Popeye’s we had closed down a few years ago, and is now a Dunkin Donuts (which is also a franchise in decline IMO). Also, when I think about it, the KFCs in the Detroit area also suck pretty hard too.
Six brewskis? - we can only hope he emerged with the crease in his trousers intact.
Just look at all that red meat, the grease, oil on those fries. I bet his vegan buds are having heart problems just looking at the X pics of his climate destroying lunch.
But, hey, David is elitist, no bugs for him.
I had a burger, fries and a soft drink and it was 18 dollars yesterday. Yea, not worth the cost. It was good but not 18 dollars good.
