My twin daughters marched with Southwind many years ago. They won national the last year they participated in their division.

I just looked up the scores. Spirit of Atlanta were 15th, our friends the Crossmen were 13th. Southwind was 22nd.

I think the year they won was 1993 in the smaller division of course. Here is video. They are the bookends of the trio at the 2:05 mark...lol

"real saxophonist" can better answer, but "Jr." drum corps anyone could participate, 21 and under. Mostly guys and gals who participated in high school/other marching bands who wanted to take their music/other talents to another level. Drum Corps back in the day were more like boot camp(so I've been told).

So many great life lessons learned for those who join in the activity...ones that participants take with them the rest of their life.
