Where woke math goes to die
American Greatness ^ | 2 Aug, 2023 | W. A. Eliot

The Mathematical Association of America, founded in 1915 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is one of the most prominent math societies in the country. The MAA focuses on math education and research at the undergraduate level and higher, and its math journals are among the most highly circulated in the world. Unfortunately, the MAA has gone woke. Its publications and blogs have been flooded with writings supporting BLM, CRT, DEI, and LGBTQ+.

As an example of the latter, in an article on pages 34-35 of the December 2020- January 2021 issue of its newsletter, MAA FOCUS, the author, who describes herself as bisexual, quotes another professor discussing intersectionality who finds it objectionable that the set theory section of a basic textbook on finite mathematics contains the following example:

Let M = males, F = females, D = doctors. What is D ∩ Fc [that is, D intersect the complement of F]?

The answer, of course, is male doctors. But the professor feels “this question is problematic in that it alienates students in my class who feel strongly against the binary in gender identification.”

The MAA’s annual meeting, MathFest, takes place this week, August 2-5, in Tampa. As evidenced by a letter from the MAA, there has been a lot of handwringing about holding the meeting in Florida:

Dear MAA Community,

We know that the location of MAA MathFest this year is a source of concern in our community. Supporters of Gov. DeSantis in the state legislature have passed laws eliminating DEI efforts and restricting the free exchange of ideas in educational settings, limiting the rights of historically marginalized groups to protest, and restricting the choices of women and non-gender conforming individuals’ freedom to make deeply personal decisions regarding healthcare and even restroom use. However, Florida is not homogeneous...

Why does everyone have to accommodate these mental illness cases?

They don’t have to do it.

They choose to knuckle under.

“ Why does everyone have to accommodate these mental illness cases?”

I’ve been around it. It’s largely due to one of two reasons. First, some people believe they can somehow personally benefit if they pretend with everyone else. Second, there are a LOT of lemmings that go along with it just because it’s the latest and greatest thing. Otherwise highly intelligent people somehow get a case of the stupids because they don’t want to think objectively. My personal observation is that those people usually end up with buyer remorse, but I found that no amount of warning does any good.

The MAA joins the ACS, APS, and AAAS that have succumbed to woke leftist perversion.

“Why does everyone have to accommodate these mental illness cases?”

An interviewer asked, “why is it you dump on Christians all the time, but you never say anything about Muslims?” The interviewee said, “because you can insult a Christian and nothing will happen. Insult a Muslim and he’ll kill you.”

The answer to your question is, if you don’t accommodate the mental illness, they may kill you. At the very least you will suddenly be involved at a physical and emotional level in a fight you simply don’t give a damn about. Yes, it would be nice if everyone took these idiots to task every time they say something stupid. But we all have lives to live and they...well, being mentally ill IS their life.

It took me a while to understand this conundrum, then I heard a good quote. It goes something like this; stupidity isn’t an intelligence problem, it’s a morality problem.

There are very low IQ’d people who avoid doing stupid things, while there are highly intelligent people that regularly do stupid things.

“ Why does everyone have to accommodate these mental illness cases?”

Two reasons:
1. It’s the current fad, and they want to signal their virtue.
2. They are obsessed with the abnormal.

A freeper recently posted an essay by Joseph Sobran, written in 1985 which lays out the modern liberal with uncanny prescience:

For the modern liberal, who is essentially a man of the Left, the immediate has apocalyptic urgency. He is an active member of the Cause-of-the-Month Club, forever prescribing drastic action to prevent the world from being blown up, overpopulated, poisoned, oppressed, or exploited. He thinks a government that maintains law and order — a big job at any time — is “doing nothing”; because to his mind a steady and quiet activity is nothing more than inactivity. Though he speaks the language of environmental preservation well enough, he never pauses to imagine the “environmental impact” of his own policies on a social ecology that is, after all, no less real because he disregards it.

In short, he is always sacrificing the normal (he is barely aware of it, or sneers at it as “bourgeois”) to the abnormal. Life, to him, is a series of crises, inseparable from politics. He is too concerned about our “rights” to bother about our health — rather as if a man dying of cirrhosis were to toast the repeal of Prohibition. If he ever has moments of well-being outside of politics, he has no vocabulary in which to talk about them.

Because they are so woke that they are afraid to call a spade a spade. The left ONLY tolerates those who agree with them on 100% of their nutty views. You can be a queer transgender black man/woman and yet if you think that abortion is bad, you are shut down and cancelled.

Methinks this will pass. Real mathematicians know that math ‘eddikators’ have the ability of Kamala (which is to say, they have no abilities in anything).

The link doesn't work.

But what you've posted by Sobran absolutely nails today.

“students in my class who feel strongly against the binary in gender identification.”

Why does it matter if some idiot faggot “feels strongly” about something that isn’t so? The school’s job is to educate, not coddle.

When I worked in mental health facilities, we saw some people with delusions. If someone thought he was Napoleon Bonaparte, we treated him with kindness, respect, sympathy and medication. We did not feel the obligation to provide him with uniforms, infantry, rifles and artillery.

Crazy is as crazy does.

I've been using that quote a lot on articles about vaxx injury. So many of my republican friends (who I thought were smart) fell for the scaremongering and have ended up with serious medical issues, yet they are not enraged in the slightest and don't voice any kind of connection between the vaxx and their present state. It's like if they showed they were mad about their predicament, it would be an admission that they were played.

As a friend called them “Trenders”. Whatever the cool hip thing was they got on board. And then there is always the “follow the money” aspect.

Heraclitus said that there is a distinction between reality and appearance. And the Sophists said that reality cannot be known directly, therefore all we can ever know is the way reality appears to us.
But rational philosophy states that the senses are valid, and that reality can be known by observation of reality by the senses plus reason. So there is no reason to favor woke math over traditional math.

Gee, I wonder what the outcome will be when the kiddos blessed with this kind of education go out and try to compete with the rest of the world’s kiddos who are taught real Math?
