John Wayne insisted that Glen Campbell play his sidekick in the movie True Grit.

Interestingly he was pretty much the only one who couldn’t read music IIRC.

I learned a lot from this thread by going to Youtube. It led me to Jerry Reed and Glen Campbell videos.

I just learned that they were both considered some of the greatest session guitarists of their time for Elvis, and Country and Western acts of the 60s and 70s. The things you learn sometimes!

Not being much a fan of their genre of music, I always thought Jerry Reed was just some cornball in stupid movies and that Glen Campbell was kind of a boring singer that held a guitar basically as a prop.

Very interesting and I have more respect for both of them now.

‘Rhinestone Cowboy: An Autobiography’ is a pretty good read, well worth the time if you like the man’s music.

Glen Campbell took Brian Wilson’s place in The Beach Boys when Brian quit touring in the late 60’s. Glen and Jerry are both bad ass guitarists.

My favorite Jerry Reed song from my childhood and Dads 8 track tapes.

Getting his role in “True Grit” alongside John Wayne reportedly came about because The Duke’s daughter was a fan of the singer’s. The two came to meet Campbell and Wayne asked him if he would like to appear in a film.

Glen, a session guitarist, with the Wrecking Crew, also played on literally hundreds of pop and Rock 'n Roll records in the '60s, including not only the Beach Boys (check out Glen's Guitar work on the instrumenatal break in "Help Me Rhonda") to the Byrds, Gary Lewis & The Playboys and many, many more.

There was a lot of musical talent on Hee Haw every Saturday night. Our family never missed the show. My uncle knew Junior Samples and ended up with the original vehicle featured on the show in his car dealer ad. The one with the dealer telephone number BR-549.

My cousin ended up with the truck and drove my aunt to our family reunion in it for the last one she attended. I can’t remember the make and model but it was old back when I last saw it 25 years ago. However, they had kept it in great shape.

The Samples’ skit used a number of trucks over the years. The oldest was probably a Model T. Another one was an early ‘50s Chevy, I’d guess.

The band BR-549 is underrated.

That is Jimmy Webb and Glen in his surfer, bleached beach boy look. Glen played on many Beach Boys records. Great photo. Those were the days.
