Amazon barred a Baltimore, Maryland-based user from its smart home features for a week over an allegation that his doorbell intercom had made a "racist remark" towards a delivery driver.
In an explanation of his experience on Medium, Brandon Jackson, an engineer at Microsoft, who is Black, said no one was home when the alleged slur was made and the incident had led him to question his use of Amazon products.
The tech giant has since restored access to his account, and said in a statement that it was working to prevent similar incidents from happening in future.
The occurrence highlights the growing number of household features and appliances that are becoming increasingly technologically advanced, and the potential pitfalls of an interconnected home.

So the Amazon products are speaking up on their own? And since they typically record or have recordings of what is captured, I’m sure they can verify, which is probably why they stored his account.
I made a decision from the outset not to have that kind of stuff in my house, and that any devices that had it built in (e.g. garage door opener) would remain disabled or crippled if necessary (disconnecting/shielding antenna).
I never thought the threshold for bad behaviour on the part of the corporate actors would be so low.
“said no one was home when the alleged slur was made and the incident”
So the implication is if someone was home and made a remark it would have been ok to have the electronic thought police shut down his home.
It really is obvious that AI will take over -- there's no longer natural intelligence to put up a fight.
At least a pit bull didn’t chew the drivers leg off.
and there it is- complete control over people’s behavior in regards to using products that rely on company oversight to run
We can only hope to be red pilled before it’s too late.
For racism now... In the future for shopping with or receiving goods from someone other than Amazon. And because they will be working with the government to control you and your home they will be allowed to do this all they like.
Lots of folks do exactly the same. And yet, do you have a Smart Phone?
Turning it completely off is the only way to safely avoid its recording your at home conversation.
racial slurs should only be used niggardly.
This is true. You can have your phone on silent, sitting on the coffee table across the room from you, and can talk about wanting a new couch with a friend, and next thing you know, you’re shown ads for couches. Happened to me.
Just a simple example of what the WEF is going to do to us. Anything connected to the internet is subject to Gov’t fascist abuse
Place phone in microwave,close door
*** He claimed security camera footage revealed his doorbell had issued an automated response—”Excuse me, can I help you?”—as the driver was walking away while wearing headphones***
It wasn’t even a Ring doorbell, it was a Eufy. Plus the guy is a software engineer. I believe him, and I hope he sues Amazon. It’s the only way they’ll learn.
LOL. That would be dangerous in my household.
I’m ready to start using cash too. Went food shopping yesterday and among other things, bought a can of Bush baked beans and paid with debit. Today, I get a tweet from the Bush baked beans official twitter account in my “For you” twitter feed.
Don’t forget to turn the microwave on.
A black guy btw
Course say the n word a lot
A fair number of folks do I think just quietly or in traffic
I hear you. It’s gotten downright scary.
My kids don’t understand why I am so stubborn about the technology. I know it’s here to stay. I know it has good things, but there’s also a lot of harm, too. There is no such thing as privacy anymore.
