World New Zealand hostel fire kills at least 6 in fire chief's "worst nightmare"

May 15, 2023 / 9:57 PM / CBS/AP

A fire ripped through a hostel in New Zealand's capital overnight, killing at least six people and forcing others to flee the four-story building in their pajamas in what a fire chief on Tuesday called his "worst nightmare."

Fifty-two people in the Loafers Lodge hostel in Wellington had been accounted for, but firefighters were still looking for others, said Wellington Fire and Emergency District Manager Nick Pyatt. He said they were called to the hostel at about 12:30 a.m.

Authorities told local media that 11 people were still unaccounted for and that the building had no water sprinklers.

Prayers for those lost, but I would never stay at a hostel.

“The building had no water sprinklers!”
Isn’t New Zealand one of the countries that surprised many by how seriously they took Masks and Vax requirements during the pandemic? Interesting how they’re all in with flattening the curve, but not all that strict with fire safety in public places.

Perhaps if they spent more time inspecting buildings and less time disarming their people, this could have been avoided.

It was an older building and so built under previous codes. Usually they are exempt when stricter fire sprinkler codes are put into effect because of pressure from building owners and other special interest groups. Pretty much all a fire department can do at that point is to regularly inspect the building and try to ensure the building owners maintain the fire protection features that are there, like fire alarms and exits.

After a building has a major fire that destroys a certain percentage of the building, some codes require a sprinkler retrofit. But that that doesn't help those who may be lost, basically for the sake of politics and money.

Hostels hold lots of backpackers...with tiny camp stoves.

Portland. Basement had a new toilet installed. No door. If you wanted to take a dump everyone could watch.

I never understood the concept of a ‘Hostel” is that like a free hotel? Who’s funding, maintaining, cleaning and managing it?

I stayed at some while hiking through Europe years ago. Maybe they are subsidized a bit by the government to promote tourism?

Although the owner probably does all right. Cram 8 to 10 people into a regular hotel room and charge them all $10 a night.

Looks a lot nice than the ones I stayed in! Appears to be small rooms for one or two people. A bed and some shelves. Bathrooms, living areas, etc. are common use.

They’re not free. They’re very cheap, because they just provide minimal services, people either sleep in bunks in dorms or in tiny 2-person rooms, and get up and leave at the crack of dawn.
