This month, a 10th Circuit Court judge sentenced a Farmington woman who pleaded guilty to killing two pedestrians while driving drunk last April to 14 years in prison, reports Yahoo. After killing them, she laughed, sang, played dumb, and never asked about the victims.
“Our system is based on punishment and rehabilitation,” said Judge Tim Cusack on Thursday as he sentenced Stephanie Melgoza, 24, on two counts of aggravated DUI and two counts of aggravated reckless driving. “I have to balance those two. What is the appropriate punishment in order to deter other people, and what is the rehabilitative quality of the person that’s being sentenced?”
Melgoza pleaded guilty in February to the four felony charges. Four lesser charges were dismissed in exchange for the guilty plea.
According to reports from the East Peoria Police Department, Melgoza struck and killed Andrea Rosewicz, 43, of Avon, Ohio, and Paul Prowant, 55, of Seattle, near the Full Throttle bar in East Peoria.
The Hearing During Thursday’s hearing, Melgoza expressed deep remorse over her decision to drink and drive and the fatal results of that decision.
“I’m so sorry for everything, and I will never, ever commit anything like that again,” she said. “I have not drank since that day. I do not plan on drinking ever again. I want to try to do something positive to make a difference, speak out about this and warn others about the dangers that come with drinking.”
The Night of the Killings
The night of the killings, Ms. Melgoza showed no remorse. She was drunk – 2.64 – but was very concerned about her car and getting to school. She never asked about the victims. it’s shocking.

I would love to have seen some follow-up video when she heard the 14-year sentence.
If fact if you are not totally on board with driving drunk you are a bad person.
Because driving drunk and killing people is just normal behavior.
Everyone does it.

The speech to the judge was so canned and corny, I am shocked that the judge kept a straight face while she was delivering her performance.
Conversing, driving, or even standing with a BAC of .0264 at age 22 indicates alcoholism. (I blew a .018 at age 20 in 1982. Stopped drinking alcohol in 1985.) The total fixation on one’s own needs and circumstances, without even one flicker of concern for others is a RARE window into the inner life of a sociopath. She forgot (or hasn’t learned yet) that others expect certain reactions in certain situations and that it is BAD when you don’t react that way, even if you feel different or (as usual) nothing unless it directly involves you (”how can I get to school?”).
Note the question - “Are you allowed to say that, as a cop?” About as impersonal an interaction you can have with someone standing right there and telling you that you have done something horrible. Only person she regards as really human is what looks back in the mirror.

I don’t think she was playing either, it was a long video of her and she didn’t seem mentally ill to me either, it looked like she really was that kind of person and had enough booze in her that the thoughts were just flowing out of her naturally.

You can’t swing a dead cat by the tail without hitting an anti-DUI psa as it is. Your voice will add nothing.
Drunks don’t listen to DUI PSAs anyhow.
She sounds like she has an alternate reality going on in her head. Possibly clinical.
She sounds crazy to me. It can take many forms, including having zero idea of there being consequences to their actions.

A girl I went to elementary school with killed a pedestrian in a drunk driving accident in an expensive resort town on Long Island when she was in her twenties. She was always kind of stuck up, and maybe a bit selfish. Last I heard about her, about ten years ago, she was 60-ish and living in a nice address in an upscale neighborhood. She probably married a well-to-do older man. Women have options men do not, especially if they are decent looking.
I will never ride a bicycle in traffic. Strictly bike paths for me. BTW, most bicyclists are a danger to themselves and motorists.
A young spoiled and indulged female psychopath too drunk and inexperienced to use any safeguards and was just speaking openly and unguardedly?
When I mentioned mental illness earlier I was not excluding psychopathy or sociopathy, I meant only the other types of mental illness.
The ones that I just can't understand are those that insist on driving in rush hour traffic. Where there is no shoulder. Why do you even want to do that??
